MENACE OF WAR

FRENCH PREMIER SOUNDS URGENT NOTE MANY MEN TO REMAIN UNDER ARMS THE INTERNATIONAL OUTLOOK. WORST FOR TWENTY YEARS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, June 27. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Paris correspondent says before the smnmer prorogation of the Chamber of Deputies the Prime Minister, M. Edouard Daladier. envisaging “the worst international situation for twenty years,” announced that two classes of conscripts must remain with the Colours after the autumn instead of enjoying the customary discharge. He said the summer would be troubled and tormented and 3,000,000 men, excluding paramilitary formations, would be held at the ■frontiers. Feverish activity reigned in the armament factories. Early troop concentrations would be important. Foreign propagandists had attempted to create differences among Frenchmen and to impair Anglo-French solidarity, without which the salvation of Europe and the world was hopeless. The Government, therefore was further reinforcing national defence and adding £85,000,000 to the sum already spent. M Daladier continued “I am convinced that we will be faced this summer with a choice between peaceful collaboration between peoples or domination by some of them. Appeasement alone is insufficient. France would raise all forces against possible ventures towards domination. “The Government will be taking, if necessary, all measures on its own responsibility.” This is interpreted as meaning a two year’s postponement of the elections, but M Daladier added that the recess might be briefer than was imagined, hinting at grave international possibilities.
