WAIRARAPA COMPETITIONS. COLLEGE LEAD IN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. The Wairarapa Hockey Association’s fixtures were advanced a further stage on Saturday. Conditions were very good except that the grounds were in most cases fairly heavy, which slowed up the games to some extent. Carterton maintained their unbeaten record by defeating Kiwi by 4/2. This was a very evenly-contested” game and was played at Carterton. Carterton owe their win to better understanding among the forwards. Their circle work was more finished in contrast to the Kiwi front line who missed numerous opportunities. S. Fisher (full back) was very safe for Carterton and did some great defensive work. M. Worsfold was also very solid in defence and sent his forwards away to the attack by heady placing shots. The Kiwi backs were excellent. A. Kay and R. Clarke were very sound. This was R. Clarke’s first game this season and the form he showed was very good. If he keeps up his present form he will take some keeping out of the representa • tives. A. Stubbings showed a glimpse of his proper form on Saturday and with H. Worthington kept the Carterton forwards fully extended.
Dalefield and Wesley provided the senior match at Lansdowne and it was a fast and interesting contest resulting in a win for Dalefield by 6 goals to 1. Sleet (late •of Taranaki) was seen to great advantage as full back for Dale--field. This player was the stumbling block to the Wesley forwards. M. Knutson was also well on his game and was everywhere he was needed. E. Steer, Wesley’s full back, was also well on his game and it was not his fault that Dalefield scored six goals. The junior first round was completed on Saturday and leaves College A at the top of the ladder with an unbeaten record. They are closely-fol-lowed by Wesley A and College Old Boys. These junior teams have been putting on some great hockey and with the competition divided from next Saturday, some brilliant hockey is sure to be seen in the next round.
SATURDAY'S RESULTS. Senior Men. Carterton beat Kiwi 4/2. Dalefield beat Wesley 6/1. Hastwells a bye. Junior Men. College A beat Carterton A 6/2. Wesley A beat Dalefield 6/3. College Old Boys beat Greytown A 6/1. College B beat Carterton B 3/2. Greytown B beat Wesley B 3/1. The position of teams in the junior competition at the end of the first round is as follow: —
REPRESENTATIVE GAME. WAIRARAPA v WELLINGTON. The Wellington Hockey Association has advised the Wairarapa Hockey Association that they have accepted the invitation to send their Senior A and Senior Reserve representative teams to play Wairarapa on July 8. The games will be played on the Lansdowne grounds. The Wellington Senior A team will be the strongest available, and will probably be the team which will represent Wellington in their shield game with Auckland.
THIRD GRADE COMPETITION. FIXTURES DRAWN UP. The following is "the draw for the third grade men’s competition: — July 1: Carterton v Greytown Scouts, at Gj’eytown; Wairarapa College v Wesley, at Masterton. July 8: Carterton v Wairarapa College, at Master ton; Grey town Scouts v Wesley, at Greytown. July 15: Carterton v Wesley, at Masterton; Grey town Scouts v Wairarapa College, at Masterton. As this is a new competition for a trophy donated by Mr M. Worsfold, Carterton, points already gained will be deleted.
WOMEN’S COMPETITIONS KIWI BEAT CARTERTON. The Wairarapa Women’s Hockey Association games were continued on Saturday when some good games were witnessed. Kiwi avenged their defeat of the first round by beating Carterton at Lansdowne by 2 goals to 0. The Kiwi defence with T. Brooks, T. Cole and I. Foster proved too solid for the Carterton attack. Miss D. Le Forte was also very solid and gave the Carterton forwards very few chances. If Kiwi can keep these backs, and their forwards will get in some good practice in stick and circle work they will go a long way. Kia Ora A again disappointed by going under to College by 2 goals to 1. Kia Ora’s trouble was lack of stamina and College just ran them off their ■feet at the finish. College are showing their true form now and several must have chances of making the representatives. Kia Ora possess several outstanding players in Misses Cadwallader, Matthews and Vincent in the forwards, who get into their job in good style. Miss Rutherford is their star back and is a solid worker from start to finish. Excelsior had a field day at the expense of Kia Ora B and ran up the huge score of 19/0. The forwards all worked together and proved far too fast for the Kia Ora backs. It will be a hard job for the selectors to leave out many of the Excelsior forwards when it comes to representative honours. The full backs are not as good as in previous years but the halves are as tough as ever. R. Harding. N. Southey and E. Barnes arc playing up to form. Results: — Senior Women. Excelsior beat Kia Ora B 19/0. Kiwi beat Carterton 2/0. College beat Kia Ora A 2/1. Junior. College A beat College C 6/1. College Old Girls beat College B 4/1. Excelsior beat Featherston 8/2, Carterton beat College D 6/0.
