DEFENCE TRAINING
RESOLUTION BY RETURNED SOLDIERS. ADVOCACY OF COMPULSION. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., This Day. Machine-gunners, of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force held a reunion on Saturday in the course of which defence topics were discussed. The following resolution was carried: "This meeting views with the greatest concern the present absurd method of training volunteers for defence in New Zealand. We consider that the voluntary system is and must be a failure as regards effective defence. The Government should immediately bring forward a comprehensive scheme of compulsory training, whereby trainees would receive at least three full months’ annual training. This meeting will assist the Government in any training scheme it brings forward, but we definitely consider that any system other than that of compulsory training is a sheer vzaste of time.”
