WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the local branch of the Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday. The president (Mrs Spicer) presided over a large attendance of members. Visitors were present from Martinborough, Kahutara and Palmerston North. Mrs W. Pope, of the Kahutara branch, gave an interesting demonstration of making lamp-shades, and was followed with much interest. A competition in connection with the photos of younger days was won by Miss Scrimgeour with Mrs H. Smith second. Misses Hanlon and McKenzie tied for first place in a competition for making flax baskets. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Marshall, D. and S. McIntosh. NATIONAL PARTY LOCAL BRANCH MEETING. A meeting of the local branch of the National Party was held on Mondayevening. Owing to the inclement conditions there was an attendance of about twenty supporters only. Mi’ D. Jones, who presided, outlined the activities of the branch since ; ts inception and on the motion of Mr A. Linton, he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his endeavours on behalf of the branch. The report and balance sheet presented by the chairman was adopted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: —Chairman and treasurer, Mr D. Jones (re-elected); secretary, Mr D. S. Sutherland (reelected); committee, Messrs Lovegrove, W. Busch, S. Mclntosh, K. McMaster and D. L. Bell; delegates to the executive. Messrs Bell, Busch and Mclntosh. Institute Ball. A final reminder is given of the Women’s Institute Ball which is to be held in the Pironoa Hall on Tuesday next. Lovers of dancing should not miss the opportunity of enjoying a. good evening’s entertainment Green and Gold Ball. The Green and Gold Ball, which is one of the outstanding social functions of the year, will be held in the Memorial Hall. Pirinoa, on Wednesday, August 16. A queen contest and crown • ing as in previous years, will be again held. Personal Items. Master Nelson Rangi, who underwent a serious operation in the Grey-I town Hospital, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery. ‘Mr and Mrs C. Hodder, who have leased their farm at Tuhitarata, are now touring the northern districts. Mrs Rangi Piripi is the guest of her aunt, Mrs Dennett. Lower Hutt. Mr and Mrs Stan Mclntosh, who have been visiting Napier, have returned home. Miss Joan Hood, who was selected by the Kahutara Women’s Institute as their candidate for the queen contest in connection with the forthcoming Green and Gold Ball, has definitely withdrawn from the contest. Mr W. Linton has disposed of his farm at Tuhitarata to Mr P. Biggar, Pahiatua.
