FOOD FOR TIENTSIN

CONVEYANCE IN ARMY LORRIES ENCOURAGING MESSAGE FROM LORD HALIFAX. JAPANESE-CONTROLLED PRESS DEMANDS. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. LONDON, June 22. The British Consul in Tientsin, Mr Jamieson, received a personal message of encouragement from the British Foreign Secretary, Lord Halifax. The British military authorities report that army lorries are ready to bring food into the concession. The municipal and private markets were without meat this morning, and the vegetable stocks were very low. The Japanese newspaper “Kokumin” declares that the Tientson issue is a turning-point in the rapid total withdrawal of the British from the Far East. Britain should abandon Hong Kong, thereby demonstrating the relinquishment of her pro-Chiang Kai-Shek attitude. The Japanese-controlled Chinese Press in Tientsin splashes its front pages with demands that Britain surrender the concession. The British Municipal Council has appealed to all Britons not otherwise engaged in public duties to join the auxiliary emergency corps, which is unarmed and without uniform except for arm bands. The authorities are doing their utmost to evacuate all women. The Japanese have not stopped a single foreign ship entering or leaving Tientsin. The commander of the British garrison troops in Tientsin requested an interview with the commander of the Japanese, but was told it was of no use if he merely wished to discuss questions raised by the British' Consul.
