WAIRARAPA COLLEGE

MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD PROPOSED GROUND IMPROVEMENTS. REQUEST TO DEPARTMENT FOR GRANT. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors was held at the College, Masterton, last night. Those present were 1 the chairman, Mr W. R. Nicol. Mrs C. C. Jackson and Messrs F. C. Daniell, L. J. Taylor, A. O. Jones, L. T. Daniell, W. H. Saunders and T. Hanley. The roll for the four weeks ending June 16 was 498, 496, 496 and 493, and the attendance was 455, 463. 469 and 470, reported the Principal, Mr G. G. Hancox. The Cornwall Street approach had been opened to traffic and was a great improvement and two more men had been provided for the groundsman under the No. 13 scheme. Mr E. Caradus and Miss Hetherington, secondary inspectors, visited the College from May 29 to May 31. Arrangements were in hand, reported Mr Hancox, for the following interschool games:—2nd XV v Palmerston North Technical High School at Masterton, Wednesday, June 28; Ist basketball v Palmerston North Technical High School at Masterton, Wednesday, June 28; Ist XV v Napier Boys’ High School at Napier, Friday, June 30; Ist XV v Rongotai College at Masterton, Wednesday, July 12; 2nd XV v Hutt Valley High School, at Lower Hutt, Thursday, July 13; Ist and 2nd girls’ hockey teams v Dannevirke High School, at Masterton, on Friday, July 14 (subject to alteration); Ist girls’ hockey team v Wanganui Girls’ College at Wanganui, Saturday, August 5.

On the recommendation of the Principal, it was decided to apply to the Education Department for a grant of £45 whereby materials could be purchased and certain works carried out by the No. 13 scheme men that would be of great benefit to the College grounds. Application is to be made to the Education Department for a night class in agriculture to commence as soon as the enrolments warrant it. On the recommendation of the chairman it was resolved to forward a letter of appreciation to Mr P. M. Smith, who had served on the board for about five years. Messrs F. C. Daniell and L. T. Daniell were appointed the visiting committee for the month.
