Otaki Maori Club Meeting Has Drawn
Excellent Fields
COMPETITION SHOULD BE KEEN AND EVEN
THE FORM OF RUNNERS REVIEWED
(By “CARBINE.”)
So good were the entries for the Otaki Maori Club’s winter meeting to be held tomorrow, that it has been decided to revert to win-and-place betting. No doubt for many of the horses the meeting will serve as a trial before the coming Trentham fixture early in July. No doubt close finishes will be the order of the day and it is very much on the card that some unexpected results will be recorded. Considerable interest will be centred round the Hunters’ Steeplechase though this race has drawn the smallest field of the programme. The Pukehou Hurdles is also an excellent betting race and the top weights will by no means have matters all their own way. Details are:—
TAINUI HACK HANDICAP, of £l2O. Six furlongs. Shining Hours 9 3Phil 8 0 Quilp 8 12 Cushla’s. Last 8 0 Liberal’s Mint 8 11 Doctor Defoe 8 0 Rarotonga .... 8 9 Golden Screen Star .. 8 8 Enterprise 8 0 Conversion ..8 8 War Cloud ..8 0 Colincamps ..8 6 Royal Show 8 0 White Rajah .. 8 4 Revival 8 0 Mother-in- De Bretts .. .. 8 0 Law 8 2 Eurotas 8 0 Miss Waitarere 8 0 Great Maturity 8 0 Bramble 8 0 Night Richelieu Eruption 8 0 Pearl 8 0
Shining Hours, who will carry the top weight in this event was never dangerous in the Meeanee Hack Handicap at Napier Park. Quilp won nicely in the same event, leading from end to end. Liberal’s Mint is also a Napier winner, scoring nicely in the Farewell Handicap at that meeting. Neither Screen Star nor Rarotonga have met with much success of late. Conversation and Colincamps do not look classy enough, while Doctor Defoe may be in need of a race or two. White Rajah is a horse who is sure to be sup • ported, while Mother -in-Law and Maturity can be depended on to make the going interesting although they have not been placed in recent starts. The rest do not look like winners and supported runners may be Quilp White Rajah ....... Liberal’s Mint OHAU HACK HANDICAP, of £l2O. One mile and 55 yards. El Meynell ..9 9 Speedfast .... 8 0 Colfort 9 2. Little Robin 8 0 Flying Acre ..9 2 Etzel 8 0 Happy Heels ..8 9 Cuddler 8 0 Aurora’s Star 8 6 Titter 8 0 Youssipof .. •• 8 4 Girl Pat 8 0 Regicide/ .... 8 4 Royal Show 8 0 '.Stella Lux .. .. 8 2 Floral Robe 8 0 Larwood .... 8 2 Renascor .... 8 0 • Colonel Bogey 8 2 Yed Prior .... 8 0 Maturity .... 8 0 Haupongi .. ..8 0 Top weight El Meynell has not raced for some time and might find the going too hard. Colfort is not in winning form. Flying Acre is not in form, but Happy Heels has two thirds in the last two starts. Aurora’s Star looks a good thing and this horse has been running well lately. Youssipof has not raced for some time and should not worry the leaders. Regicide is a form horse worthy of support and may be very close when the numbers go up. Success has not favoured Stella Lux in her last few starts nor has Larwood been winning. Colonel Bogey has a win and a third in the last two races and seems to be stepping out well. Of the others Floral Robe looks the most likely and support may go for Aurora’s Star Regicide Colonel Bogey TAIPUA HANDICAP, of £2OO. Seven furlongs. Export 9 6 Lord Moutoa 8 3 Lowenberg .. 810 Saki 8 2 Yours Truly ..8 8 Debham .... 8 0 Matoru 8 7 Diamond Sporting Gift 8 7 Cutter 8 0 Aureus 8 3 Ruling Spi ..8 0 Export, who is top weight in this race, has not been placed of late but can be depended on to make a race of it. Lowenberg will, of course, receive support but may be in need of a race or two. Yours Truly is a form horse but has not raced for some time. Matoru was never in the picture in the Kebbell Memorial Handicap at Foxton, but there is no telling what might happen in this event. Sporting Gift is another who might need loosening up before striking true form. Aureus has not been placed of recent starts but all the same this horse might be handy for a good part of the race. In the Borr.ough Handicap at Wanganui Lord Moutoa challenged strongly in the run home but could not quite make the grade. In the Empire Handicap at the same meeting this horse made the pace until the straight when he was interfered with. Saki has been going well and is sure to receive support. Diamon Cutter and Ruling Spi will also be liked but supported horses may include Yours Truly Lord Moutoa Lowenberg RANGIURU HACK AND HUNTERS’, STEEPLECHASE, of £l3O. About’ two miles and a quarter. Artful Dodger 10 4 Lactose 9 6 Lady Airflow 9 0 Callaghan 10 1 Raparahara ..9 0 Royal King .. 9 8 Thrasher .. .. 9 0 Only a small field v/ill face the starter in the steeplechase event but nevertheless a good race should result. Top weight is Artful Dodger who, although has not raced for a while, is sure to be in the hunt. Lady Callaghan is in fine fettle, scoring a win in the Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase al Wanganui. She took charge in the straight and won hands down. Royal King does not impress. Lactose has scored two thirds in the last three starts and might be dangerous. Airflow has not raced for some time and Raparahara has not enjoyed success of late. Supported horses may be Lady Callaghan Artful Dodger Lactase
TA TIMI KARA HANDICAP, of £250. One mile and a quarter. Meamea 9 0 Silvanus .. .. 7 10 Might 8 7 Corroboree .. 7 10 Hunting Cat ..8 2 Liane 7 7 Tidewaiter ..8 0 Rotoma 7 7 Rustem 7 12 Cricket 7 7 Mataroa 7 10 Might scored a win in the Empire Handicap, but is carrying a stone more in weight this time. However, this horse is sure to command support. Hunting Cat will be liked although this horse has not had much success in recent starts. Tidewaiter is another who has not been placed lately although some of the public are su’re to favour him. Rustem looks to have a good chance and should be there at the end. Mataroa is a class horse if in form but his chances do not look very hopeful. Silvanus does not look the class nor does Corroboree and Liane. Best liked horses may include Might Rustem Hunting Cat WAIKANAE HACK SCURRY, of £lOO. Five furlongs. Bourmont .... 8 7 Silver Spear 8 7 Colibri 8 7 Telamon .... 8 7 Defy 8 7 Valiant Lady 8 7 Doctor Defoe 8 7 White Foam 8 7 Game Pit .... 8 7 Gay Lord .... 8 7 Hunting Saxon Tor .. 8 0 Squire 8 7 Black Kaiwaka 8 7 Majesty 8 0 K incora 8 7 Classform .... 8 0 Lady Cygrus 8 7 Lady Tinkle 8 0 Lady Baron .. 8 7 Madonna .... 8 0 Los Andes .... 8 7 Manteau .... 8 0 Parian 8 7 Rollaway .. .. 8 0 Peach King .. 8 7 Sir Crusoe .. 3 0 Richelieu Wing of Pearl 8 7 Song 8 0 Royal Lassie ..8 7 There is no shortage of runners in the- Waikanae Hack Scurry and a good race looks certain. The majority of the form is only fair and a surprise result might possibly be registered. Kaiwaka ran in the Trial Stakes at Foxton and was in a good position but could not get up. The shorter distance might have better results. Classform was also a starter in the same race but was never sighted. Manteau may be well supported and is expected to run a good race. The rest can be depended on to make the going interesting but best support may be found for Kaiwaka Manteau Valiant Lady
PUKEHOU HURDLES, of £l3O. . One mile and a half. Erebus 11 7 All Blood .... 9 3 Lustral 10 8 Far East .... 9 0 Misurina .. .. 10 6 Sunbeam .... 9 0 Artful Royal Lack ..9 0 Dodger 10 6 Gascon 9 0 Good Sun .. .. 10 2 Ruadina .... 9 0 Chat 9 10 Golden Taumau 9 5 Memory 9 0 Toper .... 9 5
Here again an interesting race should result and the punter might be a long way away when the numbers are hoisted. Erebus, who is top weight, ss a form horse who can be expected to make things interesting. Lustral ran second to Student Prince in the June Hurdles at Wanganui on June 5. This horse made most of the running and can again be expected to go well. Good Sun may be wanting a race or two; so might Chat. All Blood should bo there when the going is tough and Gascon may not be far away at the turn. The rest seem to have an even chance but those finding favour may be Lustral Erebus All Blood RACING FIXTURES June 24 —Ashburton. June 24—Waipa. June 24 —Otaki Maori. July I—Oamaru.1 —Oamaru.
