WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNCIL MEETING. REPAIRS TO PUBLIC LIBRARY. (“Times-Age" Special.) It has recently been found necessary to replace the bath and hot water service of the public library and this work together with some necessary repairs to the bath-joom and buildings will cost approximately £50,” stated a letter from the chairman of the Carterton Public Library, read at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council last night. “I am instructed by my committee to approach the borough and county councils for financial assistance to enable us to complete this work,” continued the letter. “When a tally was taken of the persons using the rest-room it was found that they were mainly county residents and a quantity of hot water is needed for scrubbing and cleaning this part of the premises. The borough council has grafted £25 and we trust that you will give the matter sympathetic consideration.” “The library is certainly in a bad way and I think that the county could help in this case,” said Councillor A. Reid. “The rest room is definitely used by our people more than those of the town,” he said. In answer to Councillor Reid, the Clerk (Mr E. T. Beaven) explained that the request was in addition to the usual grant. Councillor, Reid moved that the county share half the cost of the necessary repairs up to £25. The motion was carried. Plunket Society Grant. A request for a grant was received from the Plunket Society and it was decided to give the society £25. Women’s Division Deputation. A deputation from the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, headed by Mrs E. W. Allen, president of the Carterton branch waited on the council with a request for assistance in straightening out a small section of land in the railway station yard. Mrs Allen explained that the Women’s Division wished to plant shrubs in the section as a centennial memorial. Permis-. sion to do this had been given by the Government and the only hitch was the cleaning up of the ground. The matter was left in the hands of the overseer to give help if possible. Permission was granted the Clerk to attend the County Clerk’s Conference at Wellington on July 25.
