Ashburton County Racing Club’s Meeting SMALL ENTRIES IN GALLOPING SECTION THE RUNNERS UNDER REVIEW (By “CARBINE.”) With the exception of the two trotting events the fields contesting the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting will be rather on the small side. Many of the horses taking part have not raced for some time, while some of them are Dunedin and other recent meeting winners. Surprise results might possibly be the order of the day. The trotting events have drawn excellent entries and both races should be close and even.
Details are:— 11.45— HINDS HURDLE HANDICAP, of £125. One mile and a half and 100 yards. Recollection 11 5 Dropped Ponty 10 8 Catch 9 0 Jewish Lad .. 10 2 Gasmask .... 9 0 Mount Vai... 9- 0 Bit o’ Blue ..9 0 Recollection is carrying quite a lot more weight than the rest of the field but in view of recent preformances is sure to command support. Ponty has not been running to form lately but is sure to give the leaders a run for it. Jewish Lad is a form horse who is almost certain to be followed up by the punter. Mount Vai scored a second and a third in the last three starts and may go well, while Dropped Catch might remain dropped. Gasmask and Bit o’ Blue do not impress and supported horses might be Recollection Jewish Lad Mount Vai 12.20WINTER STAKES, of £lOO. Six furlongs.
Chief Lama .. 8 10 Sir Gladsome 8 10 NeptuneB 10 Trasimene .. 8 10 Rosenor Lass 8 10 Ruapehu .. .. 8 10 Rye Town .. .. 8 10 Chief Lama does not impress greatly in this event. Neptune has not been placed in the last eleven races and seems off form. Rosenor Lass was close up at the finish of the Trial Stakes, at Dunedin and might be in the running again. Rye Town does not look like a winner and may be wanting for a run or two before striking form. Although Sir Gladsome has not been among the first three horses in the last four starts he is a horse who will be sure to make the going good and might also be handy at the finish. Neither Trasimene or Ruapehu impress unduly and the public might like
Rosenor Lass Neptune Chief Lama / 12.55— LYNDHURST TRQT HANDICAP, of £120; 3.43 class. One mile and a half.
Nelson Tiny McFarlane scr Axworthy 36 Ormolu .. .. .. .. scr Royal Flush .. 48 The first trotting race on the programme is the Lyndhurst Handicap and a good race should result. Lady Milne ran second to Blaydon in a twomile race at Ashburton on June 5, in 4min 35sec, and might be well considered. Diviner ran second to Rosalind at Methven and is also a prospect. Of the rest Brown Lap, Fire King, Top Hand and Loyal Rufine are expected to make a race of it, but most support may come for Lady Milne Diviner Volo Maid 1.35— MAYFIELD HACK HANDICAP, of £l5O. One mile and a quarter.
Top weight in this event is Wagner who has not been placed of late and who might also be in need of a race or two. Glenacre started first favourite over the same distance at Greymouth but only managed to fill third position. Nevertheless this horse can be depended to turn on the goods and is sure to receive a fair share of the support. Bright Prospect ran into third position a few weeks ago and might find favour. Maroha has not been successful in the last three starts and the distance might be a little too far. Comus and Knight Commander might surprise and the best fancied of a poor field might be Glenacre Bright Prospect Comus 2.10— DROMORE STEEPLECHASE, of £l5O. About two miles.
Silver Sight, who will carry the top weight in this event ran a solid race in the June Hurdle Handicap at Wanganui to fill fourth position. Silver Sight has not raced since then. Courtyard is another who has not raced for a while and in view of this 11.4 might be too heavy. Wexford Bridge is a form horse who will probably command support. Chile’ recently scored a third while Redolent filled second place two races ago. A second to El Caballo in the Roslyn Steeplechase at Dunedin might find favour for Sunny Comet, although El Caballo won easily. Uncle Jim has not started for a long time and will almost sure to be in need of a race. Culverden might also be in urgent need of a race. Support might come for Wexford Bridge Sunny Comet Chile
2.50— MORETON HACK HANDICAP, of £lOO. Six furlongs.
Phenomenal and The Wrecker jointly share the top weight honours in this race. Phenomenal is in fine form and can be expected to set a good pace. The Wrecker has not enjoyed quite as much success but is sure to go well. Garonne filled third place in the Winter Handicap at Greymouth last Saturday, and might be fancied by some sections of the community. Donadea with 8.10 up looks a good bet and is sure to find favour especially in view of a recent win over the same distance. Treasurer ran second to Skyrena over five and a half furlongs at Greymouth and should again be tough. Of the others Lockit looks the best and supported runners might include Donadea Treasurer Phenomenal 3.30— MARONAN HANDICAP, of £ 150.' Seven furlongs.
Haughty Winner has not raced for a while and might need a race or two to loosen up properly. Lazybones won nicely in the members Handicap at Dunedin, coming through with a good late run. This horse is certain to be liked. Grey Honour might be wanting for a race while Petersham has not been placed in the last six starts. Waitaka is not expected to trouble the leaders and Lady Leigh was left in the Winter Handicap at Dunedin. Land Raid does not impress nor does Lady Graceful. Eest supported horses might be
