CARTERTON

LATE MR C. PETERSEN INQUEST HELD YESTERDAY. ' (“Times-Age” Special.) An inquest into the death of the late Mr Carl Petersen was held at the residence, Somerset Road, Carterton, before Mr E. G. Eton, Coroner. After the evidence of Dr. R. N. Campbell was taken that deceased had apparently died of heart failure, a verdict of death from natural causes was returned.

SOCIAL EVENING PRESENTATION TO MISS MILLICHAMP. About 45 people gathered at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. Knutson, Clifton Avenue, on Tuesday evening to wish good luck to a bride-to-be, Miss Millichamp, who is shortly to be married. The evening was arranged by Mesdames A. Knutson, F. Groube and W. A. Pinfold. Visitors were present from all parts of the district, including Masterton and Wellington and a very happy evening was Spent. Mr Raymond, on behalf of the assembled guests, made a presentation of a beaten copper wood box to Miss “Trixie” Millichamp in honour of her approaching marriage and wished her a happy and prosperous future. Those present then joined in singing “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Miss Millichamp thanked all for the beautiful gift they had given her. GOLF CARTERTON TEAM TO PLAY ROTOTAWAI. The following players will represent Carterton in a competition against Ro.totawai on the Taratahi links on Saturday:—B. Booth, H. Dudson, R. Fisher, R. Lawrence, J. Steel, C. K. Goodin, R. BASKETBALL SUCCESSFUL DANCE HELD LAST NIGHT. A very successful dance was held in the Band Room, Hollaw’ay Street, Carterton, last evening, when a large attendance of dancers enjoyed a splendid evening to music supplied by Messrs Tom and Gordon Udy. The Monte Carlo was won by Miss J. Benge and Mr J. Garrett: the Lucky Spot by Miss C. Beer and Mr S. Tawhai. Competitions were won by Messrs O. Daysh and J. Broom. A. much appreciated extra was played by Mr S. Tawhai and the M’sC. were Messrs R. O’Keefe and L. Bicknell, who kept the dancing going with vim throughout. Supper was provided and the financial success of the function should materially benefit the Belvedere Girls' Basketball Chib.

SCOTTISH EVENING TO ASSIST PIPE BAND FUNDS. The Scottish concert and dance organised by the Wairarapa Pipe Band Ladies’ Committee, held in the Band Room on Tuesday evening, was an outstanding success, both financially and socially. A number of members of the Masterton St Andrew’s Society were present, and contributed items on the programme, which was opened with a selection played by the Pipe Band. Other items were vocal solos by Mrs Peacock, Mr McKinnon, Mrs V. L. Robinson, Mr P. PJcLaren, Miss

Rose Robinson, Mr W. Mann; humorous recitation, Miss Mitchell; vocal duet, Mrs Burke and Miss O’Donnell; monologue, Miss Hancock; pianoforte duet, Misses Heather and Jean Douglas, Misses A. and J. Fisher. The accompanists were Mr Miller Hope, Miss Sorenson and Miss McKinnon. Community singing, led by Mr Mann, finished an excellent programme. Mr T. S. Arcus, chairman, thanked all who had assisted to make the evening such a success. Supper was provided and served by the ladies’ committee, and the floor was cleared for dancing. A merry time was then spent in dancing reels, etc - . Mrs Rodgers supplied the music, the extras being played by the Pipe Band. ' '

R.S.A. MEETING FORTHCOMING FUNCTIONS. The monthly committee meeting of the Carterton branch of the R.S.A. was held in the secretary's office on June 20. There were present Messrs A. T. Murray (chairman), C. C. Callender, S. James, C. Manley, G. Rabbits, F. Taplin, H. Rathbone, and the secretary. An apology for absence was received from Mr C. A. Chennells. A letter was received from the Salvation Army inviting members to be present at a special service to be held in the State Theatre on Sunday, July 16. The speaker at this service will be Major Hayes, a returned soldier, who served with the 2nd Field Ambulance, until incapacitated by the loss of a limb. He is now the Senior Salvation Army Chaplain to H.M. Forces in New Zealand, holding the military rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. It was decided that the invitation be accepted, and that the branch hold a special church parade for the occasion. A letter was received from the Borough Council, granting permission for the erection of a flag pole in Memorial Square. A letter was received from the Carterton Savage Club inviting all branch members to a complimentary korero, to be held on Saturday, August 5, in the Masonic Hall. The invitation was accepted.

The Child Welfare Officer wrote regarding conditions under which a member of the branch and his family were living. The matter was left to the secretary to investigate and send a report to the Wairarapa secretary. It was decided that a raffle be held in aid of the branch funds. The secretary reported that the branch membership now stood at 53 financial members. As this was only the third month of the financial year, this was considered quite satisfactory. It was decided to hold a social evening for members on Monday, July 17, in the Masonic Hall. The secretary reported that arrangements for the annual ball to be held in the King’s Theatre on Monday, June 26, were well in hand, and given fine weather a successful evening is assured. * Mew State Houses. Carterton is to have six more State houses. They will probably be erected in Kent Street. Personal Items. Mrs M. H. Hume, of Ahikouka, and her daughter, Mrs K. Allen, of Masterton, are spending a holiday at Paraparaumu. Mr and Mrs-F. Fox and family left Carterton this week to take up their residence in Waipukurau. Boy Scouts. The weekly card evening in connection with the Boy Scout movement was held in St. Mary’s Hall, Carterton, last evening. There was a good attendance and prizes were won as follow: —Ladies: Mesdames Challis and Finn; men. Mrs Patterson (acting) and C. E. White. Supper was afterwards served. Church Service. A Church of England service will be held at Waihakeke on Sunday at 2 p.m.
