The solitary white heron which has been a familiar sight at Matala, Bay of Plenty, for the last few seasons, has returned to the bird sanctuary on the lagoon, where it usually spends the winter. The bird was late in arrival this year. The township and the main highway to Tauranga flank the lagoon, but the bird is little disturbed by the traffic as it wades alongside the road among the dpeks and swans.
