COSY THEATRE
TWO FEATURE PROGRAMME. “Forlorn River” and “Hollywood Boulevard” will be shown finally at the Cosy Theatre tonight. TOMORROW’S ATTRACTIONS. The thrilling story of a fatal jewel and three murders is Monogram’s exciting "The Mystery of Mr Wong,” which will be one of the two attractions at the Cosy Theatre tomorrow. “The Mystery of Mr Wong” concerns the theft of the fatal “Eye of the Daughter of the Moon” from China by Brandon Edwards, well-known collector. At a house party where James Lee Wong, is one of the guests, Edwards is murdered, and his death unveils bitterness and hatred enshrouding the household, as a result of Edwards’ cruelty and pettiness. Various motives for murder are uncovered, but it is not until two others meet violent deaths that Wong finds the missing clue that breaks the case in a surprise ending. Outstanding is the performance of Boris Karloff as the Oxford educated "James Lee Wong." Always an intelligent actor, KarlofT plays Wong quietly, giving the detective character an integrity and a quality of kindness not always possessed by screen sleuths. Joe E. Brown, in "The Gladiator,” with June Travis, Robert Kent and Man Mountain Dean, of ring fame, is the second attraction. Departing from his customary characterisations, the cavern-mouthed comedian, in his newest offering, portrays the role of a scientifically-created superman. Those who read Philip Wylie's novel of the same title will remember the humorous circumstances under which "The Gladiator” was launched on his college misadventures. "The Gladiator” is as amazing as it is amusing, picturing Brown as a virtual one-man Olympic team and a favourite with all the ladies.
