FATHER & SON

GOVERNORS OF NEW ZEALAND. When New Zealanders think of the name of Fergusson and its relation to New Zealand affairs their memories go back a few years to Sir Charles Fergusson, the Governor-General who im mediately preceded Lord Bledisloe. Few remember that another Fergusson represented the Crown in this Dominion, and that he was the father of Si)', Charles. This was Sir James Fergusson, who was Governor in 1873. Sir James was born at Edinburgh in 1832 and succeeded to the title on his father’s death in 1849. After leaving Rugby he entered the Grenadier Guards. He attained the rank of captain in 1854 but retired from the army in the following year. He was appointed Governor of New Zealand in March, 1873, arriving to take up the office on June 14 of that year. He resigned in the following year to become Governor of Bombay.
