GOLF NOTES
RIVERSIDE CLUB GAMES GOOD ROUNDS RECORDED ON SATURDAY. SOME CONSISTENT PERFORMERS. (By “Long Drive.”) On Saturday the members of the Riverside Golf Club competed in the first qualifying round of a competition, match play on handicap. Most players had good rounds but as the ground is getting much softer the short handicap players found the conditions much more difficult. S. Wyatt is proving a most consistent player. On Saturday he again played to his handicap after having it reduced the preceding week. F. E. Wells has at last come on to his game. On Saturday he recorded a net 69, but his score could easily have Been reduced at least six strokes. “Barr’s” and the “Kumbak” holes have been the downfall of this player. Another good score was returned by T. U. Wellington on Saturday. 68 net. This player is very consistent this season and should soon have his handicap reduced. C. W. Walker played a round out of the box on Saturday, his score being 64 net. This score is the result of consistent driving off the tees and accurate putting. The usual steady round was again played by W. Rew, who was up to his handicap. This player scored far too many strokes on the long holes —but a “birdie” 2 on the fifteenth is good going. O. Henshilwood also played his customary steady round, returning a card of 69 net. Had it not been for lapses of weak putting on several holes his score would have been much lower. The best card of his career as a golfer was put in by A. Dixon on Saturday when he handed in a 63 net. After taking a “six” at number 1, he could do nothing wrong and on his card he had four “birdie” 3’s on the long holes. R. Wellington has at last managed to control, his ball from the tees and by hitting them straight down the fairways on Saturday he returned a card of 86-18-68.
MAHUNGA CLUB PERMANENT GREENS PLAYING WELL. (By “Par.”) Ideal golfing weather prevailed over the weekend and the Mahunga links were well patronised by all players. The permanent greens have been in use novz for some few weeks and are in excellent order. This fact no doubt has assisted many players in improving their scores, with, in some cases, a satisfying reduction in their handicaps. After a period of some uncertainty, G. R. Brisco is now showing form more in keeping with his handicap and has overcome his slice. A little more firmness on the greens would further improve his score. Perhaps one of the most consistent junior players in the club is W. J. Boyce, who has played within a stroke of his handicap on the last five Saturdays. . ■ B. V. Bodie, a new member, is improving with each game and has now received a well merited reduction in his handicap. F. R. Brown is a player of distinct promise. He hits an excellent tee shot and scored well with a net 64 on Saturday. As a result his handicap is reduced four strokes. Jack Hosking is maintaining his good form and returned a net 68 with Jtis last card. A. E. Friend, last year’s senior chain pion, showed better form on Saturday, although he is not putting with the confidence usually associated with his game. Walter Johansen is playing consistently well and should soon be scoring in the 70’s. lan McFarlane did his best round to date on Saturday with a 79 off the stick.
