TROUBLE IN PERSIA

THREAT TO ALLIES DURING GREAT WAR. Early in 1916, disturbances in Persia under German instigation threatened Allied progress in the Near Eastern fronts. The situation called for Russian, and later British intervention. Two Russian columns passed into the country; one under General Baratoft' pushed south-westward through Ramadan to Kermanshah on the way to Bagdad. A small cavalry force succeeded in establishing communication with the British army in Mesopotamia. The possession of Kermanshah was strongly disputed and the Russian column was checked before reaching the southern plains. The second Russian column advanced through Kum and Kashan to Ispahan, the ancient capital of Persia. The British intervention in southern Persia was undertaken by a column under Sir Percy Sykes. This force pushed on and reached Kermanshah on June 13, 1916. This campaign, checked by Russia’s withdrawal from the War, nevertheless played its part in the subsequent rolling-up of -the Turkish forces in Asia Minor.
