AKITIO
RETICULATION WORK MAY BE SHUT DOWN. ("Times-Age" Special.) Because of the inability of the Tarawa Electric Power Board so far to raise any further loan money which has been authorised there is a possibility that reticulation work in the Akitio county will have to be shut down. A deputation from the board will visit Wellington to place the position before the authorities there. Reporting to the board that of the £40.000 authorised £lO,OOO had already been raised and spent and another £lO,OOO had been applied for, the Secretary-Manager, Mr W. F. Taylor, said the board could not find a lender. The lending houses had no money and the Bank of New Zealand could not help. If the board could not get any more loan money it would have to shut down reticulation work in Akitio county, which would be most regrettable. In reply to a member, Mr Taylor said the board could not find a lender. None of the insurance companies was able to assist. The chairman, Mr J. D. Wilson, said the position was most serious, specially for the settlers in Akitio county. The board had been given authority to raise the loan, and J" settlers had given their guarantees and expected the board to carry but the reticulation work. The meeting appointed the chairman and Mr L. Johnston, who represented Akitio county on the board, to approach the Minister of Public Works the Acting Minister of Finance, and also the Bank of New Zealand with a view to making some arrangement, and suggested that the M.P. for Mastertoh, Mr J. Robertson, should be asked to accompany the deputation.
