KING GEORGE V.

PLANS FOR WESTMINSTER MEMORIAL SITE IN OLD PALACE YARD. RESOLUTION IN HOUSE OF COMMONS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 10.50 a.m.) RUGBY, June 20. The House of Commons carried a resolution moved by the Prime Minister (Mr N. Chamberlain) authorising' the Government to devote to the purposes of the National ■Memorial to King George V a property in Old Palace Yard, Westminster, now vested in the Office of Works, and required for forming an open space round the statue of his late Majesty.

The Premier reviewed successive changes in the original proposal for the site and the controversies which had arisen, and made it clear that the Government had had no part in these decisions. which were the responsibility of the National Memorial Committee. He expressed the vievz, however, that the site and monument would make a worthy memorial. Incidentally, the curtailment of the site surrounding the monument would result in the release of a further sum for the Memorial Fund for the other and more costly part of the memorial scheme —the provision of playing fields. Mr A. Greenwood (Labour) and Sir A. Sinclair (Labour) also declined to revive or associate themselves at this stage with past controversies, and expressed sat isfaction at the appropriate nature of the memorial.
