KULANGSU BLOCKADE
POSITION BECOMING WORSE MORE STRINGENT ACTION EXPJECTED. SHANGHAI, June 19. The food situation in the British settlement in Kulangsu is becoming worse. The return of the Japanese Consul, General Uchida, from Tokio, is expected to lead to more stringent measures with the object of realising the Japanese demands against Britain. ENGLISHMEN SUBJECTED TO INDIGNITY. (Received This Day, 9.20 a.m.) TIENTSEN, June 19. The Consular body is protesting against a decision by British and French army officials to electrify 31 miles of wire surrounding the British and French Concessions. Two unnamed Englishmen nave reported to their Consulate that they were stripped naked at a Japanese searching post, after which they were subjected to most obscene degradations and forced to dress outside in full view of a Chinese crowd. JAPANESE PROTEST AGAINST FORCIBLE LANDING OF GOODS. CHARGE AGAINST CREW OF WARSHIP. (Received This Day, 9.20 a.m.) TOKIO, June 19. Japan has protested to the British naval authorities against the action of H.M.S. Scarab in forcibly landing goods at Wuhu. An apology is demanded. It is alleged that the Scarab’s crew pointed machine-guns at Japanese officers and men. The Domei agency declares that only the patience of the Japanese soldiers prevented bloodshed.
