GENTLEMEN RIDERS. PROVIDE KEEN COMPETITION. Gentlemen riders have always been keen to make the Carbine Plate one of the most interesting races of the Great Northern Steeplechase meeting and some of the best amateur horsemen in the North Island have been competitors for many years. Perhaps two of the most successful riders are Mr K. McK. Duncan, of Taihape. and Mr H. H. Dods, Gisborne, and several keen clashes have resulted between them.
Their rivalry in the Carbine Plate dates from 1929. when, mounted on his own horse Otairi. Mr Duncan, beat Mr
Dods on Glena Bay. Mr Duncan rode Sir Mond, unplaced, in the following year. In 1931 it was Mr Dod’s turn, and he won on Catoma, while Mr Duncan ran unplaced on the favourite, Vandyke. Seneschel, piloted by Mr Duncan. gained the honours in 1932, Mr Dods being in the field with Icimint. Beacon Fire, with Mr Duncan again in the saddle, was the winner of 1933. Mr Dods not having a ride on that occasion.
In the 1934 contest Hunting Jay, with Mr Dods up, was first past the post, but it was later ascertained that he was ineligible, and the race was awarded to Allegretto. On that occasion Mr Duncan rode Pango. When Adelene won in 1935, Mr M. O'Connor being the rider. Mr Duncan finished third on Lap Up, and next year, when Shy (Mr K. James) was successful, the minor places were filled respectively by Hunting Mars (Mr Dods) and Tail Light (Mr Duncan).
Up to this stage Mr Duncan was slightly ahead on points, but the contest of two years ago saw a most thril - ling race, with Small Boy (Mr Dods) and Tail Light (Mr Duncan) dividing the honours. Jewelled Girdle was a head away third. Neither was present last year, but on Monday Mr Duncan retained his advantage with his victory on Jewelled Girdle, beating Mr Dods on Raana. ABOUT HORSES. Among the North Island horses who may race in Australia during the spring are Beaupartir, Peerless, Dungarvan, Beaulivre, Lord Cavendish, Sly Fox, Yours Truly, Lowenberg and several two-year-olds. Beaupartir’s entries include the Epsom Handicap, the Metropolitan Handicap, the Cantala Stakes, and the Melbourne Cup. South Island horses entered for spring events in Australia include Defaulter, Royal Chief, and Cerne Abbas, all in the Metropolitan Handicap.
Last year’s Grand National Hurdle Race winner, Padishah, has been entered for the Australian Hurdles and the Australian Steeplechase, to be run on August 5 and 12. If Padishah fulfils these engagements he will not be able to compete at the New Zealand Grand National meeting. Another stallion. Ninth Duke, has been imported from England by Messrs Malcolm Brothers, of Te Rapa. Ninth Duke raced successfully both in England and in France, and is described as being a splendid type of thoroughbred. Ninth Duke is by Blandford, being the fifth stallion by the sire to come to the Dominion, while his dam. Goddess of Mirth, is a grand-daughter of Miranda, own sister to Pretty Polly, who won £37,297 in stakes. Miranda was the dam of King John who sired Gascony, Runnymede, and others before his stud career was cut short by his being drowned at Wellington in 1924. Bred on the same lines as Ninth Duke is the Italian champion Donatello II who is now at the stud in England.
Grey Honour is at present doing plenty of strong work on the Riccarton track. The horse needs it to bring him. to his best for early racing, as he thickened out during his last spell. It is intended to give him a race at Ashburton this month, followed by a trip next month to Trentham, after which he will contest sprints at the Grand National Meeting. This will bring his racing career to a close, as he is to go to the stud in the spring.
Bridegroom, winner of the hunters' races at the Auckland meeting, is a seven-year-old gelding by Minister, a son of Comedy King, and on his dam’s side has some good staying blood. At one stage of his career Bridegroom was sold for £lO.
