BADMINTON MATCH
VICTORY FOR WAIRARAPA HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY. HAWKSWORTH IN GOOD FORM. The Masterton Drill Hall was crowded with spectators on Saturday evening when Wairarapa defeated Wellington in an A grade representative badminton match. Added interest was the appearance of four members of the New Zealand Test team, and the reserve. The standard of play was very high. P. Hawksworth was in good form to dispose of Pattinson in two straight sets, and win all his matches. J. J. Payton, playing exceedingly well, beat G. A. Pearce in an exciting three-set match, and in all his matches showed that high-class badminton will be forthcoming from the North Island champion this year.
An exhibition match between P. Hawksworth and G. A. Pearce (national title holders) and J. J. Payton and J. Lulham (Wairarapa title holders) proved an outstanding game. Payton and Lulham were very unlucky not to win. as throughout the game they had the measure of the New Zealand champions, but at the last minute the pace began to tell, and the game finished 21/18 in favour of Hawksworth and Pearce. G. A. Pearce did not seem to be on his game, as he lost all his matches except his exhibition game, but the match was no guide as to his capabilities. Miss Nancy Fleming and Mrs P. Hawksworth justified their selection in the New Zealand team. The performance of the Wairarapa team was excellent, and reversed the Wisden Cup match upset.
