BROADCASTING FROM MASTERTON

PADIO STATION SZB, which arrived at Masterton today, is, as the picture shows, really a specially appointed railway carriage converted into a broadcasting studio in miniature. It is hooked on to express trains and sidetracked at selected broadcasting points. The front end of the car is occupied with a neatly furnished announcer’s studio with microphones and piano, for use in local broadcasts, and three turntables for the playing of records and overseas features. The middle part of the car houses the equipment and gear cd at 250 watts, estimated to cover a rear portion is taken up with a small office, living quarters for the crew, and kitchenette. The technical equipment is completed with a 30ft. aerial, which, when collapsed, gives a tunnel clearance of barely three inches; The power is rated at 250 units, estimated to cover a radius of about 40 miles, where selectivity and other conditions are reasonably favourable, and the wave-length is 1360 k.c. SZB will broadcast regular daily sessions (7—9 a.m.; 12—2 p.np; 6—lo p.m.) until 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Its wave-length is easily located between 4ZB, Dunedin, and 2ZA, Palmerston North; 1360 k.c.
