GRAIN AND PRODUCE

PRICE OF POTATOES. TO BE WATCHED BY TRIBUNAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) • CHRISTCHURCH, June 16. Potatoes are among the goods the prices of which are to be watched by the recently appointed Price Investigation Tribunal. Mr H. L. Wise, one of the two members of the tribunal, said today that potatoes were not considered a perishable commodity within the meaning of the regulations, and that price increases would therefore have to be notified to the tribunal. Mr Wise gave this information after conferring with the president of the tribunal, Mi’ Justice Hunter, adding that this was the tribunal’s present view. Asked if merchants as well as retailers would have to notify price increases, Mr Wise said yes. The regulations, he said, applied to wholesalers, retailers and, where goods were manufactured, to manufacturers. The on trucks price of potatoes in the city today was quoted at £lO nominally. The price is nominal because practically no business has been passing this week. Very few orders are being received from the North Island, where the markets are fairly well supplied. Three shipments, aggregating about 18,000 sacks, were made available to the Auckland market about the beginning of the week, and about 5000 sacks are due for shipment tomorrow. Others markets are quiet and featureless. There is no export inquiry for small seeds and practically all stocks have passed into merchants’ hands.
