CARTERTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING AT PARKVALE. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women's Institute held in the Parkvale Hall, Mrs N. Peacock presided over a good attendance. Motions of sympathy were passed to Mrs G. H. Deller and Mrs W. Adlam in their recent bereavements. It was decided to hold a concert in the Parkvale Hall, and arrangements were made to commence rehearsing for it. The design and details of an Institute Banner were decided upon. It was resolved to have the banner made and worked. A request for a donation to the Centennial Exhibition fund for the Women's Section was agreed to. A. demonstration of pen painting was given by one of the members, Mrs W. George, for which she was heartily thanked and presented with a shoulder spray. The monthly competitions were won as follow: —Seniors: Worked cushion cover: Mrs C. Jensen, 1; Mrs B. Renall. 2; Mrs J. James, 3. Best bloom: Mrs £. McGarvie, 1; Mrs R. Williams, 2; Mrs L. Rayner, 3. Juniors: Pikelets: Miss E. Brassel. 1; Miss J. Warrington, 2; Miss L. Rayner, 3. Best bloom: Miss L. Rayner, 1; Miss J. Warrington, 2; Miss E. Brassel, 3. A roll call on gardening hints brought forth some very good and useful ideas. A competition, guessing the articles in a- match box, which was arranged by Mrs M. Johnson, was won by Miss E. Martin. Mrs B. Renall won another competition arranged by Mrs IV. Adlam. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames H. Kirk, W. King, T. King and G. W. Hart. GOLF CLUB DRAW FOR MEN’S BOGEY. The following is the draw for a bogey competition to be played on the Taratahi links on Saturday next:— From No. 1 tee: Shankland and Whitburn; Clark and Taverner; Hughes and Riggs; R. Beaven; S. Booth and Fitzgerald; Harry and Tankersley. Bowling Trophy. Mr H. Masson, of Te Kaiwhata, has written to the executive of the Carterton Bowling Club that he proposes to donate a trophy to the Carterton Club to perpetuate the memory of his late father who was for many years an enthusiastic member of the local club. The committee met last evening and decided to recommend that the trophy be a challenge cup for a rink competition. The secretary was authorised to inform Mr Masson of the club’s decision. It was resolved that a cabinet be ordered and placed in the pavilion to house the various trophies held by the club for competition among its members, and that at the end of each season they be kept under lock and key in the pavilion. Personal. Mr Les. Tunnicliffe, of Dalefield, left Carterton yesterday to spend a holiday in the Auckland district. Mrs L. Sorenson, of Paremata, is visiting Carterton, and is' the guest of , Mrs R. Smith, Victoria Street Carterton. Girls’ Club. On Wednesday evening a most enjoyable time was spent when members of the Carterton Girls’ Club gathered to honour one of their members, Miss B. (“Trixie”) Millichamp, who is shortly to be married. During the evening items were rendered by Misses V. and A. Sorenson, J. Lane, V. Irwin and Miss Millichamp. At a suitable interval in the proceedings Miss C. Berrill, in a neat little speech, asked Miss Millichamp to accept, on behalf of the members, a beautifully embossed firescreen and referred to the valuable services that had been given to the club by the guest of ■be evening, who hifd for several years ''"ueen the club’s secretary. Musical honours were accorded Miss Millichamp, after which she returned thanks for the gift. Supper was served bj r the committee and a pleasant evening closed. New School Bus. A Ford school bus to the order of a Featherston client was on view at Gordon Hughan Ltd’s, premises yesterday and was admired by many visitors to the garage. It is a bus built similar to those on the road between Masterton and the South Wairarapa townships. It is exceptionally well finished and equipped and should be a very comfortable vehicle for the purpose of the conveyance of children from adjacent districts to the Featherston District •High School. There was also on view a Ford motor truck to the order of the Wairarapa South County Council which is to be used on the roads in the Te Wharau district. Rugby Teams.
