Lord Chatfield, speaking in the House of Lords, said Britain was well on her way to achieve readiness for war. Progress during the past four months had been highly reassuring and was steadily increasing. Dealing with civil' defence, ho said fighter squadrons were so disposed as to intercept the enemy at the earliest moment at a high altitude. Guns were placed to protect all important areas. An enormous number of searchlights had been installed and there was a balloon barrage to stop low-flying attacks. Light anti-aircraft guns were capable of a tremendous rate of fire and there was also an intelligence system, including an observer corps.
