BRITISH TERRITORIALS
CONTINUED GOOD PROGRESS IN RECRUITING. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 14. The total strength of the Territorial Army is now approximately 406,000 officers and men. Recruiting in the campaign for doubling the territorial field army during the fortnight ended June 10 brought in 5529 recruits. The total potential strength of the territorial army field force on that date was 288,579 and the potential increase since April 1 has been 158,449. The total numbers of persons who have joined the regular reserve and auxiliary forces in the last three months is approximately 236,000. HEALTH STANDARDS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 14. Of 17,856 men medically examined between June 8 and 12 under the Compulsory Military Training Act, 15,081 (or 84.5 per cent) were passed as fit and only 413 (or 2.3 per cent) were classed as definitely unfit for training. ' Commenting on these figures in their bearing on the results of the post-war developments in the nation’s health services, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Health, Mr Burneys speaking in Edinburgh, said they were encouraging and represented a great improvement since medical, examinations of war-time recruits 25 years ago, when the numbers placed in the No. 3 category so disturbed the conscience of the nation. The post-war expenditure on social services, Mr Bernays declared, great though it had been, was abundantly justifying itself.
