Addressing shareholders of the Bank of New Zealand today, the chairman of directors (Mr A. T. Donnelly) spoke of the great regret felt at the death of Mr William Watson a few weeks after he had presided (in the chairman’s absence) at the annual meeting of shareholders last year. Mr Donnelly observed that although Mr Watson was in his ninety-second year, his vigour of body and mind was remarkable and gave promise of the attainment of a still greater age. “For four ygars—from 1894—Mr Watson was President of the Bank, and thereafter, from the alteration of the Bank's constitution, served continually as one of your representatives on the board, about 43 years in all,” Mr Donnelly added. "Mr Watson saw the Bank overcome its difficulties of the nineties, and his wide experience of banking, his mature judgment and wise counsel, contributed materially to the institution's steady progress to its present strong position. Eulogistic reference to his services was made by several speakers at last meeting. Shareholders. I am sure, will join in our deep regret at the passing of their old friend and highly esteemed representative.”
