FEATHERSTON

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The members of the Featherston Horticultural Society held their annual meeting last night. The Rev R. S. Keenan was in the chair, there being also present Mesdames Wakely, Harkness, Lowell, Arch Clark, Bloxam, Tutbury, Lawson. H. Clark, McKenzie, Rea (secretary), Misses Card, J. Matthews, Wilkinson, Esma Card, Messrs R. W. Matthews, Chas Rea, H. Clark and Carter. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Carlyon, Charles, Luke, Smith, Yule, Ritchie and Carter, Misses McTaggart, Z. Tutbury, Messrs G. Yule, J. W. Card and Arch Clark. Resignations were received with regret from Mrs Algar Williams (chairwoman) and Mrs Brophy. A vote of condolence was passed with Mrs Q. Donald. The date of the show was fixed for Thursday, November 16. Mr R. W. Matthews offered two challenge cups for competition among professionals and amateurs, respectively, in decorative tables. Miniature cups are to be presented to the winners. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Matthews for his generous offer. Mesdames Wakely, A. Clark, McKenzie, Rea and Miss Card will select the cups. The society decided to give a prize for the best decorated table to be decided by popular vote. It was decided that the prize money for the best decorated table be 10s 6d (first) and 5s (second). SCHOOL ASSOCIATION WEEKLY CARD PARTY. Owing to the rough weather the attendance was not so good as usual at the Home and School Association’s weekly euchre tournament held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall. The prize-win-ners were as follow: Ladies, Mrs Lowell 1, Mrs Charles 2. Men: Mr Perry I, Mrs Rea (acting) 2.

River Board Meeting. At a meeting of the South Wairarapa Rivei’ Board there were present Messrs R. McDougall (chairman), W. H. Martin, R. W. Matthews, B. A. Donald, A. Linton and T. A. Herrick. An apology for absence was received from Mr A. H. Ashdown. Accounts amounting to £37 8s were passed for payment. It was decided to arrange with Mr McMaster to undertake the opening of the Lake when necessary. Mr McMaster is to use his bulldozer for this purpose and the arrangement is to continue for a period of 12 months. Fire Brigade Meeting. The monthly meeting of the Featherston Fire Brigade was presided over by Superintendent T. Tidswell. Accounts amounting to £5 Ils 6d were passed for payment, including £4 licence for the new engine. The Featherston Borough Council wrote thanking the brigade for assistance given at the fire in the dry weather which seriously threatened the bush round the reservoir. A donation of £5 was also enclosed. Superintendent Tidswell reported that several members had attended the annual reunion of the Silyerstream Brigade and a most enjoyable evening was experienced. Fireman Davidson reported having attended a fire brigade reunion at Pahiatua. It was decided to offer for sale the model “T” fire engine which has been replaced by the new engine. It was decided to hose down the Town Hall and the borough offices on Saturday afternoon.
