MINIATURE RIFLES INTER-CLUB MATCH. ("Times-Age” Special.) Carterton fired an inter-club match against Greytown on the Carterton range last night and good shooting throughout was shown. Mrs Ross and Mrs Murray will be in charge of afternoon tea. CARTERTON BOROUGH INCREASE IN RATES. A special meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night for the purpose of considering the estimates for the current year. There were present the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, Councillors W. A. Hart, Miss O. Wolters, H. Mortensen, L. Clark, C. Stevens and R. A. Copeland. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors E. McKenzie, C. J. De Lacey and J. Udy. The estimates were carefully considered and a slight increase was decided upon. The consolidated rates last year amounted to 11.35 d. This year there will be an increase of .4d due to the increase in the hospital rate and street lighting. The confirmation of the estimates will take place and rates struck at a meeting on June 27.

BOY SCOUTS WEEKLY CARD TOURNAMENT. The weekly card tournament of the Boy Scouts was held in St Mary’s Hall last evening. There was a large attendance and the prizes were won as follow: Ladies, Mrs Pauling 1, Mrs Challis 2. Men, Mr K. Hodder 1, Mrs M. Parker 2. A Heavy Frost. A very heavy frost which covered the countryside with a white mantle was experienced in Carterton and district this morning. Personal. Mr Charles Reid, of Clareville, who recently underwent an operation in Croydon Hospital, is progressing satisfactorily. Returned Soldiers’ Ball. The ball committee of the Carterton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association held a meeting at which final arrangements for the annual ball to be held on June 26 were made. Painful Injury. A painful injury was suffered by Mr R. Ireland, a borough workman, on Tuesday. Along with other workmen he was engaged at the headworks of the borough water supply and in the course of operations a large stone became displaced and rolled upon Mr Ireland’s foot, with the result that a toe was broken. He was attended by Dr W. J. C. Wells.
