EMPTY SEAT

O, FRENCH PRESIDENT'S RIGHT. There is an empty seat in the cathedral of St. Jean de Maurienne, eighteen miles from Modane, Savoie, and only the President of the Republic has the right to occupy it should he attend the cathedral. It is a seat among 44 handsomely carved choir stalls dating from the fifteenth century, and is situated nearest to the altar, on the south side. By virtue of a privilege which goes back to 1489. the head of the government of France is honorary canon of the cathedral. The Due de Savoie. Charles 11. nearly five hundred years ago purchased the privilege for 5000 florins, for himself and his successors, and it is for this reason that the President of the French Republic has an empty seat waiting for him in Lie choir of the cathedral of St. Jean de Maurienne.
