CAN BLACK THREAD BEAT VALMEEN?
BIFORM SHOULD GO WELL IN STEEPLES
(By “CARBINE.”)
Win and place will be the form of betting at the Bay of Plenty Racing Club’s meeting to be held on Saturday. Good fields will contest the majority of events and the public should be treated to a good day’s racing. Considerable interest will be centred round the Opotiki Handicap which is to be run over a distance of one mile and a quarter. Horses which have been winning at other meetings will be seen in action and if the track is at ali favourable good times should be registered. The Farewell Handicap, the last race on the programme, has also attracted some class horses and it will be interesting to see if Black Thread with 10.8 aboard ca« win from the brilliant Valimeen vyho is only carrying 9.6.
Tea Gong scored a third at Franklin recently and looks like a prospect. Gazeful has not been placed lately but may receive plenty of support. Little Idea ran third at the recent Poverty Bay meeting. Maereana has not been placed in the last five starts and should not prove troublesome. Little is known of the rest, but those fancied may include Gazeful Tea Gong Little Idea STEWARDS’ HACK HANDICAP. Seven furlongs.
Vaalsstar .... 8 2 Acre ....8 0 The top weight Ohmaha is a form horse and has a win and a second in the last three starts. This horse is sure to find favour. Spearford has not been going so well lately and during the last four starts has failed to run into a place. Midland carried 10.10 to easy victory in the Waikato Plate, a distance of one mile. Midland went to the front early and was never headed, winning easily. Susan scored a third in her last start and Little Ruse has not been placed in the last two starts. Erlick is not a form horse while Vaalsstar has not been placed over the last four starts. Star Vaal does not impress nor does Master Appellant. Simla looks the best of the others who should not worry the top weights very much. Public opinion might favour Ohmaha Midland Susan PAY OF PLENTY STEEPLES. .About two miles and a half.
X.J ~ •“ Biform, who will carry top weight in this event is a form horse. In the Waikato Steeplechase Biform caught the leaders at the last fence and came away in the straight to win nicely. The extra weight may, of course, make a difference. Lucidus will probably be supported but at the weight does not impress greatly. London scored a third recently and seems to be in good form. Gadger, when in form is a good horse, but has not met with success of late. Count Roussillon, like Gadger, is a good horse when in form but has not
been placed lately. Those followed up by the public may include Biform London Lucidus OPOTIKI HANDICAP. One mile and a quarter.
The Opotiki Handicap should prove one of the best races of the day and a thrilling finish seems assured. King Hey, the top weight, can be depended on to make a race of it, although this horse has not .been placed in recent starts. Gold Vaals is in fine fettle and in the last three starts has scored a win, second and third. Gay Rose came home strongly to win the Presidents' Handicap at the Waikato meeting and is only carrying two pounds more in weight. De Friend has not shown true form of late but is sure to be in the running. Airam has a strong finishing run and if with the leaders in the straight should go close to place honours. Payola is in splendid form and has been placed in the last thirteenstarts. Black Musk,' Philcourt and Du. Maurier will all receive support but the best liked may include Gay Rose Gold Vaals Jayola WAIOEKA HACK HANDICAP. One mile.
Raana scored nicely at Poverty Bay and is sure to find support in this event. Spinning Wheel has a win and a third recently and is running well. Long Span finished strongly to fill second berth in the Horotiu Handicap at Waikato. Raceline finished fourth in the same event and made up ground in the straight. Neither Master Appellant nor Star Vaal impress, and the rest of the field will probably find the going too fast. Support may come for Raana Spinning Wheel Long Span K. S. WILLIAMS MEMORIAL ‘HANDICAP. One mile.
uay winci .. o o The top weight, Silver Jubilee, may be in need of a race dr two before striking true form. Besiege ran -second in the Maeroa Handicap, a distance of 7 furlongs at the Waikato meeting. De Friend may not go to the barrier, while’ Marie’s Acre was never dangerous over 7 furlongs at Waikato. Black Musk hung on well in the To Rapa Handicap, a distance of one mile, and filled fourth position. However, the weight increase is rather considerable. Eastern Heir will not be far away as they turn for home and will bo fancied by some. The rest should not bother the top weights unduly and best supported horses may be - Besiege Black Musk Eastern Heir or De Friend OTARA HURDLES. One mile and three-quarters.
Count Roussillon fell at the sod wall in the Melville Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at Waikato. Gadger looked a likely winner about half a mile to go in the same race but a bad jump finished his prospects. The rest of the field have no performances that stamp them as anything outstanding, and in an open race the public may favour Count Roussillon Gadger Nuipapa
/* 1 I 1 S I O 17 vUIUMIIJ) <7 \J The Farewell Handicap will probably provide a fitting finish to a good day’s racing. Form horses will contest the event and some surprise results might be registered. Black Thread will probably be a hot favourite, while Valimeen is also sure of strong support. Ohmaha and Midland are sure to make the pace hot, while Gazeful and Spearford are not likely to let the leaders have too much lead. The best supported horses may include Black Thread Valimeen Ohmaha or Midland
THE SPORT OF KING’S OVERSEAS.
PERSONAL AND OTHERWISE. , Backers who followed G. Richards for the first six weeks of the English’, racing season at a set stake of £1 a< race had an unprofitable time. Although he won 1G of the 128 races in | which he rode, his followers lost a little over £62. In England the Thoroughbred Breed-I ers’ Association has an experimental: farm near Newmarket. It is under the supervision of a most capable veterin-'; ary surgeon, Mr Fred Day, whose oper-’ ations on mares have been particularly, successful. A notable recent instance, was that of Plack. a One Thousand Guineas winner. After being barren since 19.33, she foaled this season to’ Obliterate. Plack is 18 years old. If Pooley Bridge runs in the com-j ing V.R.C. Grand National Hurdles,; and he probably will, it will be his, fourth start in that race. He won with 11.3 in 1936, fell with 12.8 in 1937, and was seventh with 12.1 last year. It he should strike his 1936 form he will be hard to beat with only 71b more than he carried on that occasion. Pool- ; ey Bridge is rising nine, but, at that,; he is not too old to show first-class form. Last year’s winner,- Dakwood, was seven. Winners of two Nationals, were: Redleap, 9.8 and 11.2; Buzzi, 9.0and 9.11; Obi, 9.12 and 11.7; and Fiscom,; 9.3 and 11.6. The Grand National Steeplechase has only twice been won, by the same horse —Daipiio <9.3 and 11.10), and Mountain God (11.5 and 12.7).
Gordon Richards, the most famous rider England has produced for a long! time, tells a good story against him--self. “Eighteen years ago,” he says, “I. rode my first winner. It was on a horse: owned by the late Jimmy White in an ; Apprentice Plate. The trainer said the horse needed a longer course, so I, thought he should get it. I took him into the next parish at every turn and finished wide under the stand rails. When I got back, the trainer said. ‘Well done, boy; but why did you go so. wide?' ‘Oh,’ I replied, ‘You said he •needed a longer course.’ ” RACING FIXTURES June 17 —Bay of Plenty.
