SHAKESPEARE RELICS
INTERESTING FRENCH DISPLAY. An exhibition was opened in May, in one of the wings of the Louvre, devoted to “Shakespeare and France,” organised by the Franco-British association, Art and Travel. In the exhibition were a number of models for scenery used in the production of Shakespeare’s plays in France, as well as drawings and designs for costumes. Oil paintings played an important part in the exhibition. Delacroix and Chasseriau were represented by several Hamlets and Othellos, respective favourites of the two painters. Draw-; ings by Gustave Dore, watercolours by Moreau, Eugene Lami, L. Boulenger, Deveria, Redon and others were among the many works of art inspired by Shakespeare, One French painter of the past, Rouviere, a pupil of Gros, was haunted towards the end of his life by the certainty that he was Hamlet reincarnated, and he painted several portraits of himself dressed as'the Prince of Denmark.
The manuscripts shown included translations of Shakespeare by Alfred de Vigny and Victor Hugo, and scores by Berlioz of incidental music.
