POLAND AND THE DANZIG CUSTOMS UNCOMPROMISING STAND BY COLONEL BECK. GERMAN SHOT BY FRONTIER POLICE. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. LONDON. June 11. The Polish Government today formally rejected the Danzig' Senate’s demand for a reduction in the number of Polish Customs officials in the ETee City it is reported from Wars a w. The Foreign Minister, Colonel Beck, declared that Poland would not tolerate the Danzig Senate's intervention in Customs matters. He added that if the Polish officials were in any way hampered he would not only further increase the number but also order economic reprisals against the Free City. The German official news agency says that Polish frontier police shot dead a German. Erwin Lubetski, aged 22, who was attempting to go to Germany near Tarnowitz because he could not find work in Poland, states a message from Berlin. It is reported that Germany is strongly protesting to Pol ■ and against the shooting of Lubetski and is demanding an immediate inves tigation, with punishment of those responsible and compensation for the relatives.
ARREST BY NAZIS POLISH CUSTOMS INSPECTOR. ALLEGED KIDNAPPING & BEATING. (Independent Cable Service.) WARSAW, June 12. The Danzig secret police have arrested M. Jan Lipinski, a Polish Customs inspector, -who left his post on June 9 and did not return. The Polish authorities have ascertained that he is held for drunkenness, but it is claimed that M. Lipinski is a teetotaller. M. Chodacki, the Polish Commissioner in Danzig, protested over the kidnapping and beating by Nazis of Lipinski who, it is alleged ,was taken from a cafe, forced into a motor-car and driven to the outskirts of Danzig, where he was left unconscious on the roadside. An unknown person telephoned the police, advising where to find “ a Polish spy” (states aJTess Association message). The Associated Press states that the Danzig Government has announced that it is charging Lipinski with attempted kidnapping and espionage. A public trial is promised. The London "News Chronicle’s” Warsaw correspondent reports that a sensation was caused at the Danzig Senate’s dinner in honour ot General Lutze, head of the German Storm Troopers, by the arrest of two high Senate officials at the General’s table. ■ The Nazi leaders in sitting down were shocked to di;-over leaflets de nouncing the Nazi regime and Herr Hitler attached to the menus. General Lutze, who had intended to remain t Danzig for 24 hours, left immediately highly annoyed. The President of the Danzig Senate, Herr Greiser, has apokgised to Berlin, where, it is reporte .1, he has gone on a long holiday. The Independent Cable Service stat's that 50 Nazis, among them waiters and minor officials, have also been arrested
