CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL

PLANTING SCHEME APPROVED BY COMMITTEES. NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN APPROACHES. The planting of the principal approaches to Masterton as a centennial memorial was discussed yesterday by a meeting of committees representing the Masterton Borough and Masterton County Councils. The meeting approved the scheme and recommended its adoption to the respective bodies! The proposals are to plant deciduous trees a chain apart at the southern and northern approaches to the town. At the southern end it is intended to plant a distance of 27 chains from Jackson’s Service Station to the Solway Showgrounds corner with idesias, which will be staked for protection purposes. At the northern end a length of 4C chains of roadway is to be dealt with from Mr T. F. Watson’s residence north to the recently acquired borough park. On this area it is intended to plant a variety of maple, which has grown with such conspicuous success in First Street. These trees will be protected by iron piping and netting. The trees are to be planted ten feet from the side of the road, in order to allow for future footpath construction. Subject to the approval of the County Council, it is intended to put the work in hand immediately. The planting will be carried out under the jurisdiction of the Park Custodian (Mr Sturgeon).
