LONDON QUOTATIONS ADVANCE IN BUTTER PRICES. SHARP RISE IN CHEESE. A further advance took place last week in the price of butter in London. New Zealand choicest salted butter was quoted on Friday at 117 s to 118 s, a rise of from 3s to 4s a cwt on the week. A year ago the price was 120 s to 121 s a cwt. The latest quotation is still well below the London equivalent of the New Zealand guaranteed price of 124 s 3d a cwt. ■ According to the cabled report supplied by the Primary Products Marketing Department to the Dairy Board, the market was quieter at the end of the week. Friday’s closing quotations, with those of the previous week in parentheses, were as follows:— New Zealand, salted, 117 s to 118 s (114 s a year ago, 120 s to 121 s); unsalted, 118 s to 120 s (115 s to 116 s); a year ago, 123 s to 1245. Australian, salted 115 s to 116 s (112 s unsalted, 115 s to 117 s (113 s to 114 s). Danish, 105 s f.0.b.; 126 s to 127 s spot; (98s; 1225). Market firm. Dutch, unsalted, 112 s to 113 s, ex 115 s (108 s to 110 s). Irish creamery, salted, 117 s (113 s Lithuanian, unsalted, 113 s to 114 s (110 s to 112 s). Polish, salted and unsalted, 110 s to 112 s (105 s to 109 s). South African, 112 s to 113 s. The retail price of New Zealand butter was increased last week from Is Id to Is 2d a lb, that of Danish remaining unchanged at Is 3d. The present price of 118 s is equal to approximately 14.09 d a lb, fo.b., New Zealand ports, compared with the guaranteed price of' 14.89 d a lb, f.o.b. The London equivalent of the guaranteed price is 124 s 3d a cwt. The equivalent price of cheese is about 6.57 d a lb, f.0.b., compared with the guaranteed price of 8.42 d. Deliveries of New Zealand butter from store last week totalled 1715 tons. The quantity in store, including 686 tons ex Dominion Monarch, Imperial Star and Port Brisbane, was 5558 tons, as against 3407 tons a year ago. Deliveries of Australian butter were 748 tons, the quantity in store being 2554 tons, as against 4988 tons a year ago. The Imperial Economic Committee estimates stocks of butter in store at 789,109 boxes, compared with 934,141 boxes a year ago. There was a sharp rise in the price of cheese last week, New Zealand advancing by from 6s 6d to 7s a cwt, to 59-60 s. Friday closing quotations, with those of the previous week in parentheses, were as follows:— New Zealand: White, 59s to 60s (52s 6d to 535; a year ago, 68s 6d); col-
cured, 59s to 60s (53s to 53s 6d; a year ago, 68s 6d). Australian: White’and coloured, 56s to 675. Canadian: White, 71s to 72s (71s to 725); coloured, 71s to 73s (71s to 725); c.i.f., 56s (51s to 525); old season’s coloured, 82s (82s). Market steady. English: Finest farmers’ 90s to 100 s (90s to 100 s); factory cheese, 51s. South African: White and coloured. 52s to 56s (51s 6d to 525). The retail prices of New Zealand cheese advanced from 6d to 7d a lb last week. Deliveries of New Zealand cheese from store last week were 21,265 crates. The quantity in store, including 16,650 crates ex Dominion Monarch and Imperial Star, was 109,701 crates, compared with 66,805 crates a year ago. Deliveries of Canadian cheese last week were 3414 boxes, the quantity in store being 75,531 boxes, as against 61,085 boxes a year ago. Gradings of cheese in New Zealand for the week ended June 3 totalled 5491 crates, of which 3754 crates were white and 2187 crates coloured.
