TAKING OF LONDON
ROMAN EXPLOIT RECALLED. The Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, contains one of the finest collections of medals and coins in the world. Among the rarest of the coins and medals is one commemorating the taking of London by the Romans. A writer in ‘'Excelsior” declares that an offer was made from England of ten thousand pounds for this coin. The medal shows the Roman Emperor lifting a kneeling figure of Britain to her feet while Victory places a crown of laurels on his brow.
The medals were found a few years ago during excavations in the war wrecked area near Arras, and it is thought that they formed part of a war treasure abandoned by the Romans returning from England through France.
