FOOTBALL MATCHES WIN’ FOR PONGAROA. (“Times-Age” Special.) |Both football games on Saturday were the Pongaroa Domain, and resulted as follows: — Pukehinau 3 drew with Coast 3. Pongaroa 9 defeated Tiraumea 0. COAST v. PUKEHINAU. Some surprise was caused when Coast drew with the leading team. A splendid try by Hartgill in the first spell gave Pukehinau the lead, which they held until early in the second half, when a penalty goal by lan Hay evened the score, which remained unchanged. Mr D. McDonald was the referee.
PONGAROA v. TIRAUMEA. In the Pongaroa-Tiraumea match Pongaroa opened their score early in the game, with a try scored by Gordon Wright. Peters was unable to convert. Splendid kicking by this player in the second half, however, gave the home'team six more points, when he kicked two penalty goals. Mr W. T. Rauter controlled the game. REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. TEAM TO PLAY BUSH. The following have been selected to represent the Sub-Union in a match against Bush: —Backs: I. Hay, F. Hodder, F. Herbert, B. Little, D. Bowie, L. Berry, Hartgill; forwards, H. Maranui, J. McMillan, W. Meech, J. Meech, G. Thompson, G. Laing (captain), R. Newland, Lynch. Emergencies: Backs, C. Churchouse, B. Bellshaw; forwards, M. Harold, C. Gi chard. Owing to injuries, W. Thomas was not available. The sole selector, Mr P. A. Donovan, will manage the team. HOCKEY MATCH PONGAROA BEATS TIRAUMEA. A match played between Tiraumea and Pongaroa on Saturday resulted in a win for the latter by one goal to nil. The game was played on the local Domain, the referees being Mesdames Scott and Rankin. CUP WON BY LADIES. Playing in the six-a-side tournament in Nelson on the King’s Birthday a team composed of Akitio players succeeded in winning the cup, only one goal being netted against them during the day. The team comprised Misses Pearl Berry, Winnie, Kathleen and Marcie Smith, and Dora and June Kent. ( Personal Items. Mr J. Gainey, who has been visiting his father, Mr C. Gainey, has left on c motor tour of the West Coast and Southland, accompanied by Mr and Mrs L. Pearson and Miss Pearson, Masterton. Mrs G. T. Smith is visiting her sister, Mrs R. Gray, Te Rehunga.
