OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

HOTEL STAFFS (To the Editor.) Sir. —The Government has recently set up z a tribunal to deal with the increased cost of living, and it is certainly two years or more, too late in doing so. As one who travels New Zealand regularly, I find Masterton one of the most Expensive towns in the Dominion, many articles being dearer here than anywhere else; for which there is no legitimate excuse whatsoever. Another Question which the Government should immediately deal with, is the matter of hotel accommodation, hotel tariffs and hotel services. The plain fact of the matter is, in many instances the travelling public are not getting adequate service for .the charges they have to pay. Hot water services are inadequate in many cases, and on certain days of the week staffs appear to be totally inadequate to give the public efficient service. I have seen one waitress expected to attend to 30 or more people, in more hotels than one, though I was under the impression that this was irregular.- The paying public have a right to expect reasonably adequate attention and the staff have a right to reasonable consideration and assistance. With the present rates charged, it is ridiculous to say, an extra hand cannot be employed. I intend to see the Prime Minister personally next week, in the matter. —I am, etc., “TRAVELLER.”'
