Messrs J. Ronald (Wellington) and Carty (Nelson) are on a visit to Masterton and are staying at the Hotel Midland.
Mrs F. M. Paulsen, Sydney, who has been visiting Auckland, is staying in Masterton as the guest of Mrs C. W. McMillan, Renall Street, Masterton. Mr N. O’Kane, who was injured in the Wairarapa-Hawke’s Bay senior football match last Monday, has had to enter the Masterton Hospital for treatment.
Mr and Mrs J. H. Berney, of Masterton, are to make their home in Eketehuna, Mr Berney having purchased the residence in John Street, lately occupied by Mr W. G. Macky. Mr and Mrs J. R. Berney will live with them. Arrangements are being made for Mr Justice Callan to act as Judge of the Court of Arbitration in the place of Mr Justice O’Regan, who is absent by reason of illness. This announcewas made by the Attorney-General, Mr Mason, at the weekend. Mr Alexander M. Williams, at present secretary of the Taranaki Hospital Board, has been appointed secretary of the South Hospital Board, states a Press Association message. He will replace Mr Thomas Pryde, who is retiring after 31 years in the position.

The Archbishop of Wellington and Metropolitan of New Zealand, the Most Rev. Thomas O’Shea, returned to Wellington by the Limited express from Auckland on Saturday after a tour abroad which lasted 10 months and involved many thousand miles of travelling. He was welcomed at the railway station by the Rev Dr A. J. Mcßae, Chancellor of the Archdiocese, the Minister of Education, Mr Fraser, and a large gathering of'Roman Catholic priests. The Archbishop later presided at a Mass of Thanksgiving, celebrated in the Church of St Mary of the Angels, Boulcott Street. The death occurred yesterday morning of Mr Edward Robert Fox, de-puty-mayor of Westport, at the age of 77 years. Mr Fox had had a long association with local bodies in the district, states a message from Westport, having been a member of the Westport Borough Council for the last 20 years, and a member of the Buller Hospital Board for the last 17 years. He also was coroner in Westport from 1927 till his retirement last year. He was a vice-president of the West Coast Justices of the Peace Association. and a former president of the Buller Progress League. Mr Fox leaves a wife, four daughters and six sons.
An old Masterton boy, Dr. Reuben McMaster, who has been residing for the past 16 years in America, returned to New Zealand by the Monterey and reached Masterton yesterday afternoon. Dr. McMaster served his time in the establishment of the late Mr H. T. Wood, chemist, Masterton, where he passed his chemist’s examinations. Later taking up his residence in America he established a chain of drug stores in various cities. He passed his degree of doctor of medicine in 1928, doctor of public health in 1936, and licentiate of the Free University of Mexico in 1938. Dr. McMaster intends to spend a holiday in Masterton.
The death occurred at the Wairau Hospital recently of Miss Cora Evelyn Mills, the eldest daughter of Mrs Mills and the late Hon. C. H. Mills. The late Miss Mills was born at Havelock, where she lived with her parents for a number of years. Later the family moved to Spring Creek, where they resided until the late Mr Mills, who represented the district in Parliament, was given the portfolio of Minister for Customs. A move was then made to Wellington, where a number of years were spent before a return was made to Blenheim. The late Miss Mills was very widely known throughout Marlborough district. Miss Grace Mills, of Blenheim, Mrs V. E. Donald (Masterton) and Mrs C. Harbottle (Wellington) are sisters, while Mr C. H. Mills, of Blenheim, is a brother. Another brother Mr Irvine Mills, died some years ago.
