NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW
OFFICIAL OPENING. STRIKING DISPLAY AT PALMERSTON NORTH. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N„ June 10. If the complete success of the opening day may be taken as a guide, the thirty-seventh National Dairy Show of the Manawatu and West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association promises to be one of the most successful of the series. The weather for today’s opening was overcast, but fine till late in the afternoon, when a sharp shower fell. The sky cleared again in the evening, however. and the night was fine, but cold. The show will last a week, concluding next Saturday evening. Before noon a steady stream of people was passing through the entrance gates. After lunch visitors arrived in much larger numbers, and when the time came for the official opening of the show by Sir Harry Batterbee. High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, both stands were full and some thousands were packed round the oval. It is estimated that the attendance during the afternoon totalled 9000, but because of a decided drop in the temperature the attendance in the evening was disappointing. . The exhibits, both competitive and trade, particularly the latter, were most attractively displayed, and in the brilliantly-lighted exhibition halls they made a striking show. The halls were well patronised by the public throughout the day and evening. As is usual “sideshow alley” had its own particular public, a very numerous one, and appeared to be doing good business. Entries in the competitive sections total 3344, compared with 3197 at last year’s show. In the apples section the estate of D. P. Loasby (Greytown) won several first and second prizes.
