THE CENTENNIAL
WELLINGTON DISTRICT MEMORIALS. DECISIONS OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL; (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Centennial memorial projects for all parts of the Dominion were considered at yesterday’s meeting of the National Centennial Council in Wellington. The projects totalled more than 100. submitted as follows:—Auckland, 69; Taranaki, 18; Wellington, 14; Otago, 10; Westland. 9; Canterbury, 5; East Coast. 14; Nelson, 3; Hawke's Bay, 1; Southland, 1. The Government town-planning officer, Mr J. W. Mawson, was present in an advisory capacity. The majority of the projects were approved, some were approved subject to further information being obtained, and some were held over for various reasons. Ten were rejected. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Parry, who presided, several times expressed admiration of the enthusiasm and the enterprise shown in many of the smaller districts. It was pleasing to see the number of tree-planting schemes, he said, and also the community centres proposed for one or two of the more scattered districts.
Decisions in respect of the Wellington provincial committee’s recommendations were: Taihape, restroom building and Plunket rooms —approved; Wellington, centennial park at Miramar, look-out on Mt. Victoria, and historical publication—approved; Foxton, restroom buildings and play area—held over; Wanganui, historical publication —approved; Petone, provincial memorial hall and bathing pavilion—approved; Wanganui, memorial winter garden building—held over for consideration as to site; Marton, centennial memorial park—approved, subject to a detailed plan being supplied; Palmerston North, erection of a foundation in the Square —approved, subject to the fountain being shown as a memorial; Shannon, memorial avenue of trees —approved; Manawatu district, lookout and tree-planting on Mt. Stewart —approved; Feilding, sports pavilion, Kowhai Park —approved; Maxwell, hall for indoor games and social gatherings—approved. A recommendation by the Nelson provincial committee for a recreation ground in Tahununui was held over, as was also the public hall proposal for Tasman. Proposed improvements to the park at Brightwatcr were approved.
