RUGBY IN WAIRARAPA
MEETING OF UNION. REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES ARRANGED. (“Times-Age" Special.) The fortnightly meeting of the Wairarapa Rugby Football Union was held in the P. and A. Board room last evening. Mr H. A. McPhee (president) being in the chair. Also present were Messrs H. B. Booth H. Benge. M. J. Parker. C. A. Gray K. Reid, S. Henson, B. Welch, K. G. Fairbrother and the Secretary (Mr E. McKenzie). An apology for absence was received from Mr Pearson. The treasurer reported that the credit balance at date was £136 13s Id. The receipts since the last meeting were £75 0s ,10d. Accounts presented and passed for payment totalled £79 6s, including the cost of the Hawke’s Bay tour. Members of various clubs wrote forwarding doctors’ certificates for injuries received and declaring, on accident fund of the Union.
Rex Playle was granted a transfer from the Carterton Juniors to Greytown juniors to the Opaki juniors, owing to change of residence. The secretary of the Wairarapa Referees’ Association wrote in regard to the inspection of players outfits or dress at any time during a game, and that a referee had power to order any player to remove any part of his outfit which in his opinion was not up to the regulation, and not allow him to take part in any game until such was removed. After discussion it was decided that the Rugby Union members should meet the Referee’s Association next Wednesday at Carterton for the purpose of discussing the question. The Auckland Rugby Football Union wrote stating that it was proposed to hold a centennial rugby tournament during the second week in the August holidays of 1940, the idea being that each primary school in New Zealand be invited to enter a team in the competition. The matter was referred to the Primary Schools Union to deal with. It was resolved that owing to a misunderstanding the fourth grade match set down for May 27 between Featherston and Martinborough Will be played on the first suitable date. The Marlborough Rugby Football Union wrote stating that its senior representative team, comprising 24, would leave Wellington on June 15, and would arrive at Masterton the same evening at 8.40 o’clock. Mr K. Reid was appointed manager of the Wairarapa team. It was decided that on the Sunday the visitors be taken a tour round, the district, arrangements for which was left to the manager. The secretary of the New Zealand Rugby Union wrote stating that the proposed tour of the Fiji team had been cancelled owing to restrictions imposed by the Government of Fiji. The New Zealand Rugby Union wrote asking for the names of five referees be sent forward for selection for forthcoming representative games. Messrs H. J. McKenzie, E. Grantham, W. Grantham, J. Blake, and H. Matson were recommended.
The principal of the Wairarapa College wrote asking permission to play the following games:—First fifteen v Rongotai College at Masterton; Secon fifteen v Palmerston North Techriical High School at Masterton; .First fifteen v Napier Boys’ High School at Napier; Second fifteen v Hutt High School at Lower Hutt; First fifteen, Quadrangular tournament at Wellington. Permission was granted.
Owing to Mr E. McKenzie being absent from the Wairarapa during the season at various intervals, Mr K. G. Fairbrother was appointed to the referee appointment board in his stead. It was resolved that all lower grade matches be played at set down on Saturday, June 17, the date of the senior representative match, Wairarapa v Marlborough.
The question of regrading Huxtable an old Hawke’s Bay senior player, now at Cross Creek to junior grade was held over subject to receipt of a written application. .
The following senior representative fixtures were agreed to: —Wairarapa v Marlborough at Masterton, Saturday, June 17; charge of admission to be Is 6d gate, Is stand; July 8, Wairarapa v Bush at Pahiatua; July 15, Wairarapa v Hawke’s Bay, at Masterton; July 22, Wairarapa v Poverty Bay, at Carterton; August 5, Wairarapa v Nelson, at Masterton; September 16, Wairarapa v Wellington, at Wellington. The manager of the Wairarapa Senior representative team, which visited Napier on King’s Birthday, reported on the good behaviour of the team and the excellent game played. Wairarapa being unlucky to lose the service of several of their backs owing to injuries received on the previous Saturday. Mr Reid was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and the secretary was authorised to write to the Hawke’s Bay Union thanking them for the splendid way in which the Wairarapa had been entertained. Mr K. G. Fairbro'ther reported in regard to the junior representative game Wairarapa v Hawke’s Bay played at Masterton on King’s birthday and was accorded a vote of thanks.
