HIMALAYAN PEAK
ASCENT BY NEW ZEALANDERS PLANNED , PROJECT FOR NEXT YEAR. THIRD-HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN WORLD. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Eight New Zealand alpine climbers are making plans to attempt an ascent of Kinchinjanga, in the Himalaya Mountains. The expedition will take place next year and of the party as planned at present, five will be drawn from Christchurch. Kinchinjanga, which is the third-highest peak in the world, is generally regarded as a more difficult climb than Mount Everest. It is 28,146 feet high, compared with Everest (29,141 feet) and Godwin Austen (28,250 feet).
The expedition has beeiV under consideration for the past two years and extensive negotiations have been carried on with the Government of India for the permits which are necessary. The size of the party—eight—is considered to be the minimum with which such a bold project could be attempted. All arrangements with the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs for passports and other documents have been completed and the present intention is to sail from New Zealand about the middle of 1940. so that an attempt can be made on the peak in August of that year.
