Admiral Byrd informed the House of Representatives sub-committee which is studying the request for an appropriation for an Antarctic expedition, that portions of Antarctica falling in the Western Hemisphere came under the Monroe Doctrine and only 575 autlcal miles separated Palmer Land from South America. He added that the expedition, for which a preliminary appropriation of 340,000 dollars was being asked, would ultimately cost 1,000,000 dollars. The expedition would include three ships and a personell of 200, and would probably leave on October 1, and rereturn in six months, though it would carry supplies for two years.
