Hawke’s Bay Winter Meeting
CAN PADISHAH WIN THE STEEPLECHASE?
SOME CLOSE FINISHES SHOULD BE ORDER OF THE DAY
(By “CARBINE.”)
First-class entries have been received for the Hawke’s Bay winter meeting which will be held tomorrow. The betting will be single pool. The fields in the majority of the races are very evenly matched and the public should be treated to some exciting finishes. Most interest will probably be centred around the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase, where almost all the runners engaged have scored recent wins. Padishah is carrying 11.13 in this race and it will be interesting to'see if he can score a victory over a field of excellent horses. Details are:—
MAIDEN PLATE; five furlongs. Defray 8 7 Hunting Kaiwaka 8 7 Moments 8 7 Solicit 8 7 Charles Hugo 8 7 Laughing Hyderabad .... 8 7 Song 8 7 Final 8 7 Tangirere 8 7 Flying Flag ..8 0 Modern Way ..8 7 Harina 8 0 Woglinde 8 7 Black Te Ore 8 7 Majesty 8 0 Golden Odavarb 8 0 Melody 8 7 Madonna 8 0 Richelieu Julietta 8 0 Pearl 8 7 Silver Court 8 0 Game Pit 8 7 Yogi 8 0 Anini 8 7 Lord Midas ..8 0 Awhiorangi ..8 0 Laughing Song ran second in the Trial Plate at Napier last week and should, find favour amongst the punters. Defray had two fourths at Napier Park and if in form will be worth watching. Lord Midas has not had much success of late but is a horse which can be expected to make a good showing at any time now. The rest of the bunch are fairly even and a surprise win will probably be seen in this race. However, support might favour Laughing Song. Defray. Lord Midas.
WHAKATU HURDLES; one mile and
a half. Small Boy .... 11 4 Omarere 9 3 Curie 11 0 Umpire 9 3 High Grader 10 11 Thrasher 9 3 Misurina 10 0 Helios 9 0 Contact 9 5 Parry 9 0 Small Boy who carries top weight in this event is a form horse and is expected to go well. Misurina carried 9.9 to easy victory in the Waiohiki Hurdles at Napier last week and should not be worried by the slight increase in weight. Omarere ran a close second to The Tramp in the Moteo Hurdles recently and has only increased 31bs. in weight. Parry scored a third and a fourth recently and is about due for a victory. Curie is of course a' recognised prospect. Those finding support might be Misurina. Omarere. Small Boy. WOODLANDS HACK; six furlongs. Quilp 9 3 Hillside 8 4 Native Song .... 9 3 Colin 8 2 Proclamation 8 9 Imogen' 8 2 Gold Ballad ..8 8 Marsyas 8 0 Hunting Royal 8 8 Haile Selassie 8 0 Colincamps .... 8 4 Scoring two wins at Napier Park over the same distance the top weight Quilp will probably start a favourite in this event. Quilp carried 8.10 to victory so the increase in weight should pot make a great difference. Hunting Royal has run second to Quilp on two occasions recently and with only 8.8 up might reverse the tables. Native Song is in good form while Colincamps and Proclamation may find the company too smart. Of the rest Imogen looks the best but best support might come for Quilp. Hunting Royal. Native Song. HAWKE’S BAY STEEPLECHASE; about two miles and a half. Padishah 11 13 Willonyx 9 12 Sporting Song 10 5 Rapa Waiata 9 5 Primak 9 12 Wykemist .... 9 0 Count Kikiroki 9 0 Padishah although carrying over a stone more than the rest of the field will be in great demand. Count Willonyx and Wykemist both scored at Napier Park and should be there at the death. Rapa Waiata and Kikiroki will both be on hand to make the running solid while Sporting Song and Primak will be also well fancied. Best supported horses might include Count Willonyx. Padishah. Wykemist. WINTER HACK HANDICAP; one mile and a quarter. Birkology 9 3 Elettra 8 0 Hunting Mint 8 11 Tigreterre .... 8 0 Reay Bridge ..8 8 Arabic 8 0 The Ring 8 2 Ebb and Flow 8 0 Form horses will contest the Winter Hack Handicap and the top weight. Birkology, is sure to be followed up by the punters. Hunting Mint scored nicely over a mile at Napier Park and is bound to be liked. Ebb and Flow, Reay Bridge and Arabic appear the pick of the rest who have not been well enough of late to be seriously considered. Support might come for Hunting Mint. Birkology. Reay Bridge. CLIFTON HACK HANDICAP: six furlongs. Centrepoise .... 9 4 Hunting Native Song ..9 2 Royal 8 8 Golden Flame 9 1 Lindrum 8 5 Royal Spades 9 1 Halley 8 4 Screen Lord .. 9 1 Gay Laura .... 8 2 Lucullus Bov 8 8 Helios 8 2 Gold Ballad .... 8 8 Whetu 8 2 Id do 8 3 In view of Golden Flame’s win in the Birthday Handicap at the recent Napier meeting that horse will probably carry plenty of support. Centrepois has the honour of carrying top weight in this event and is sure to go well. Hunting Royal is sure to be a place challenger while Whetu scored
over this distance at Napier. Lindrum is in form and will give the top weights something to think about. The others have all been running well and a good close finish should result. Among those finding favour may be Golden Flame. Whetu. Hunting Royal or Lindrum. HERETAUNGA HANDICAP; six furlongs and a half. Flammarion .... 9 13 Reipar 8 6 Golden Granvale .... 8 5 Blonde 9 3 First Royal Chapter 8 2 Minstrel 8 11 Sir Nigel 8 0 Solaria 8 10 Stitch 8 0 Okawa 8 9 Fossicker 8 0 Soho 8 7 Top weight Flammarion looks a good thing in this event and two wins at Napier Park will sure to swing the public in his favour. Okawa has run second to Flammarion twice recently and is expected to be alongside the top weight near the post. Fossicker is a horse who might be well considered in this race while Royal Minstrel will see that the leaders do not get too far in the <van. Granvale is also worth considering and Soho can be depended on to make a race of it. Those finding favour might be Flammarion. Okawa. Fossicker. RACING FIXTURES June 17 —Bay of Plenty.
