GEOGRAPHY TESTS
FOR OLD AND YOUNG. In order to test the ability of upper standard pupils to profit from the reading of newspapers, the Headmaster of the Masterton Central School (Mr E. G. Coddington) made up a test from a recent newspaper, and gave it to the upper classes with results which he describes as interesting and profitable. Having been told that the average adult would fare badly in a similar test, Mr Coddington has forwarded the test paper mentioned, so that readers may try it for themselves. In dealing with the following items, pupils were invited to select what they thought to be the correct answer and then to consult the atlas to see whether they were right.

The Japanese were forced to retreat on the Hupeh front. —Hupeh is in north, south, east, west China. Poland has rejected Danzig’s demands. —Danzig is on the Black, Baltic, North, Adriatic Sea. Note sent from Warsaw to Nazi headquarters.—Warsaw is in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Rumania. Their Majesties drove through the streets of Victoria. —Victoria is a city of eastern, western, central Canada. Level cressing fatality at Paraparaumu. —Paraparaumu is in Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki province. Mine manager severely burned at Greymouth.—Greymouth is a town on West Coast. East Coast South Island; West Coast, East Coast North Island. Sheep dog trials held at Gisborne. — Gisborne is north, south, east, west of Napier. Levin Bowling Club seeks affiliation with Wellington.—Levin is a town north,, south, east, west of Wellington. New houses at Foxton Beach. —Foxton is at the mouth of Wanganui, Waikato, Ruamahanga, Manawatu River. Fijian football team tour cancelled. — Fijian Islands are off the coast of Australia, in Indian Ocean, in Arabian Sea, in Pacific Ocean. Glasgow system of leases for Manawatu land.—Glasgow is in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales. Manawatu land is round 'Masterton. Palmerston, Levin, Hamilton.
