YOUTHS IN COURT
CHARGE OF STABBING TAXI-DRIVER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 7. Two youths, arrested yesterday as an outcome of an assault on a taxi-driv-er on Saturday night, appeared in the Magistrates’ Court today both charged with assaulting William George Styants so as to cause actual bodily harm. As one of the youths is only 16 years 9 months and is ouside the jurisdiction of the Magistrates’ Court, he appeared before Mr W. R. McKean, who sat as a Children’s Court. He was remanded by consent till June 23, and as neither the Child Welfare Department nor the boy’s father would undertake the responsibility of looking after him, the magistrate remanded him in custody and ordered him to be kept apart from other prisoners. The other youth, Bruce Phillips, aged 17 years and 5 months, appeared before Mr C. R. Orr Walker, in the Magistrates’ Court. He was remanded by consent till June 23. Bail was allowed in the sum of £lOO with a surety of £lOO, the magistrate directing that if the bail was not forthcoming the accused be kept apart from other prisoners.
