GAME OF BADMINTON

AUSTRALIAN TOUR REVIEWED. WAIRARAPA INTER-CLUB RESULTS. (By “Shuttle.”) As June 10 approaches increased interest is being taken in the performances of the leading candidates for the Badminton team which is to tour Australia in a few weeks hence. The inter-provincial tournament at Palmerston North, which provided the selectors of the New Zealand team some food for thought, has made the task of forecasting the personnel of the team an easy one. The following, in the opinion of the “Times-Age” Badminton critic, would do well in Australia:—Men: P. Hawksworth (Wairarapa); G. A. Pearce (Wellington); J. ( Spedding (Taranaki); E. A. Roussell (Wellington). Women: Miss N. Fleming (Wellington).; Miss M. Kerr (Dunedin); Mrs P. Hawksworth (Wairarapa); Miss T. Greaves (Wanganui). In the men, Hawksworth and Pearce are certainties. Spedding and Roussell, however, are doubtfuls. Rousseff's bad lapse at the Palmerston North tourney will take a lot of making up at New Plymouth on Saturday (the Wisden Cup final between Auckland and Wellington). I. Ellet and M. T. Wilson will require some staving off.

The selection of the women’s team is more difficult. The first three players mentioned above are regarded as certainties, while the fourth place will hinge on the Wisden Cup match. Either Miss Fernie or Miss Edmonton might fill the fourth place. The announcement of the team on June 10 will be eagerly awaited. The manager’ of the team, the Rev H. W. Austin, chaplain of Wanganui Collegiate School, introduced the game into New Zealand in 1926. The first club was formed at the Wanganui Collegiate School in that year. The Wairarapa Badminton Association inter-club A grade competition first round has been completed. There were no surprises. Masterton A beat Regent by 11 matches to 1; Nomads beat Martinborough by 9 matches to 3. Details are: —
