POLICE SEARCH

OF HAWKE’S BAY BEACHES. FOLLOWING ON DISCOVERY OF HUMAN FOOT. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) NAPIER, June 4. An unsuccessful search Of Westshore and Petane beaches was made today by the police in the hope of discovering further remains of the missing body, a foot from which was discovered a few days ago. A swag, billy and other goods were discovered on Petane beach yesterday afternoon, and were placed in the hands of the police. There are no marks of identification on any of the articles, but it has now transpired that a. swagger was seen by local residents about three weeks ago walking from the road to the beach in the vicinity of the place where the swag was discovered. Furthermore, the swag was found within a mile of the place where the foot was discovered, in a location bare of shelter and unsuitable for making camp. The cheap make of the shoe, the use of a cut-down cotton stocking for a sock and the present discoveries incline the police to believe that the foot is the only remains so far discovered of a swagger who met his end on Petane beach about three weeks ago. Inquiries throughout the district have" revealed that the shoe was apparently not repaired here, the type of sole affixed being one not commonly used by Hawke’s Bay repairers. A Dominion-wide search for details regarding missing persons is being conducted.
