PROGRESS HELD UP
ON SOUTH ISLAND MAIN TRUNK DELAY IN THE DELIVERY OF STEEL. RAILWAYS DEPARTMENT CONTRACT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Delay in the delivery of steel for the Clarence River Bridge is holding up progress on the northern section of the South Island Main Trunk Railway. The steel superstructure of the bridge is being constructed in thirteen spans and weighs approximately 1000 tons. The contract for the fabrication of the steel was let to the Railways Department, months ago and it was anticipated that no difficulty would be encountered in handling the work. The fabrication is being carried out at the Railway Workshops in Wellington, and an inquiry as to the cause of the delay will be made by the Minister of Public Works (Mr Semple) who learnU ed on Saturday that it would be several months yet before the steel would be available. In other respects good progress has been made on the northern section of the line.
