WELFARE LEAGUE

WORK FOR PAST MONTH. REQUEST FOR WAIRARAPA OFFICER. The monthly meeting of the Women’s National "Welfare League was held at the. Midland Hotel yesterday afternoon. There were present, Miss Kummer (in the chair), Mesdames Charleson, Fletcher, Free, Garland, Glen, Henderson, McKenzie, Kilgcur, Pither, Reynolds, Tolhurst, Misses Eoddington and Guild. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames J. Caselberg, Carruthers, Collie and Hunter. Letters of thanks were received from the secretary of the Wairarapa branch of the New Zealand Society for the assistance of crippled children; also from Dr. Parr for work done in the hospital and from Mesdames Wardell, Whyborn, Gooding and Latimer ack-, nowledging messages of sympathy in their illness.

Members expressed pleasure at the completion of the Women’s Rest Room. It was suggested that the council be requested to put up in Queen Street a direction >sign.

Two visits were paid to the public hospital in May and fruit, flowers, etc., were distributed. Members of the League expressed their willingness to assist in the provision of a children’s sandpit at the hospital. Visits for the current month were arranged. A visit was paid to the Buchanan Home on May 18 when cakes, biscuits and sweets were distributed. Each inmate was presented with a sprig of heather. The following items were greatly appreciated: Lawson Pither. bagpipe selections; Mrs Morton, pianoforte items; Mesdames Alexander and Speight, vocal solos. The matron entertained the visitors at afternoon tea. It was decided to send a letter' of thanks to Matron Higginson for her efforts in securing for a South African war veteran burial in the soldiers’ plot. The report on welfare work showed that no fewer than nine necessitous cases had been visited. Owing to the heavy drain on supplies of clothing, etc., the League would greatly appreciate donations in the form of parcels to be left at Mr Shoosmith’s shop. It was decided to write to the department stressing the need for a welfare -officer in the Wairarapa district. Mention was made of the valuable work done by Miss Munro. Mrs H. P. Glen has taken over the duties of secretary and her telephone number is 2571.
